US launches centralised VA health-records portal, first implemented in Indiana

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has begun rolling out a new Federal Electronic Health Record system, centralising veterans’ records, prescriptions and secure messaging into VA.gov with the first deployments at three Indiana facilities on 22 August.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has begun the initial rollout of a centralised Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) portal, with the first deployment going live at three facilities in Indiana on 22 August, officials said.

Single portal to combine records and services

The new system will migrate the existing My HealtheVet functionality into VA.gov, bringing together veterans’ medical records, prescriptions and secure messages in a single online portal. Officials said the change aims to reduce the need for veterans to carry or repeatedly supply records when seeking care, and to prevent loss or duplication of tests and information.

Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr Paul Lawrence visited Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis on 20 August as part of the launch and described the system as a significant improvement in record-keeping and care coordination.

“What this does is it allows veterans not to have to search and bring information and records and carry it with them,” Lawrence said, adding that the system should mean tests are not lost and veterans are not asked repeatedly to provide information they have already supplied.

Lifetime tracking and nationwide coordination

According to officials, the Federal EHR will maintain veterans’ health records dating back to their time in the military and will track medical care for life. The single portal is expected to standardise access across VA health facilities, enabling veterans to manage appointments, view prescriptions, check secure messages and access disability benefit information from one platform.

Officials said the centralised approach will also support multi-state care, making it easier for veterans who move or receive care in different locations to have a single authoritative record that follows them.

  • Go-live date: 22 August
  • First locations: Roudebush VA Medical Center (Indianapolis), and VA centres in Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana
  • Key features: combined records, prescriptions, secure messaging, appointment management and access to disability benefits
  • Data scope: veterans’ records dating back to military service and maintained for life

What officials say the portal will change

Implementers argue the portal will improve operational efficiency at VA facilities by using a single patient-facing interface regardless of where veterans receive care. That consolidated access is intended to reduce administrative burdens — for veterans and clinicians — and to provide a consistent view of clinical information across sites.

While the initial rollout is limited to three Indiana sites, officials indicated the transition is part of a broader national deployment plan to move My HealtheVet functionality into VA.gov and standardise the electronic health record environment across the VA network.

Health systems elsewhere will be watching the deployment closely. Centralised EHRs can deliver benefits in continuity of care and data availability, but large-scale implementations also pose challenges including data migration, user training, interoperability with non-VA providers and safeguarding patient privacy.

Officials have presented the rollout as a step to better serve veterans’ long-term health needs by ensuring their clinical histories remain accessible and consistent no matter where they seek care. As the rollout expands beyond Indiana, monitoring how the system handles records from different eras of care and integrates with external health providers will be critical.

The federal EHR initiative represents a major investment in digital health infrastructure for veterans. Patients and clinicians should continue to seek guidance from VA information channels about timing, access procedures and any local changes to appointment or prescription handling as the new portal is adopted more widely.

As always, readers with concerns about their personal health records or care should contact their clinic, health provider or the VA directly rather than relying solely on online portals for urgent clinical advice.
