Pitso Mosimane has been approved by the South African Football Association's National Executive Committee (NEC) to take charge of Bafana Bafana, but final details of his contract remain under negotiation ahead of a formal announcement next week.

SAFA delegation held talks; offer revised

Following a recommendation from SAFA's Technical Committee, led by Jack Maluleke, senior SAFA executives travelled to meet the three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach as they worked to conclude a deal. The delegation included CEO Lydia Monyepao, CFO Grony Hluyo, Technical Director Molefi Ntseki and Chief Medical Officer Thulani Ngwenya, according to the report.

It is understood that SAFA has since doubled the initial package offered to Mosimane, with Hluyo communicating a revised offer of R5 million a year. That figure is well below the monthly packages reported for his predecessor, with Hugo Broos said to have been on about R1.4 million a month. SABC Sport previously reported Mosimane's package at Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020 as R1.5 million a month.

“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,”

SAFA President Danny Jordaan provided that confirmation after what the association described as a “robust and engaging” NEC meeting, during which salary-package matters were discussed vigorously.

Coaching team and readiness to start

Mosimane — popularly nicknamed "Jingles" — has previously served as Bafana assistant coach (2006–2010) under Carlos Alberto Parreira and Joel Santana, and as head coach from 2010–2012. Sources close to negotiations told SABC Sport that Mosimane has expressed a desire to return to the national setup and sees unfinished business with the team.

The coach is known to travel with a compact technical team. His usual strength and conditioning coach, Kabelo Rangoaga, and match performance analyst, Musi Matlaba, were identified as part of the package he would bring. It is reported that they — and a possible additional assistant suited for the international game — were prepared to begin work immediately while contract talks continued.

What is on the table

The publicly reported figures and details from the negotiations to date are limited to the following:

  • Revised offer communicated: R5 million a year (reported by CFO Grony Hluyo)
  • Reported previous monthly packages: Hugo Broos – about R1.4 million a month; Pitso Mosimane at Sundowns in 2020 – R1.5 million a month (SABC Sport reporting)
  • Qualification: Mosimane is the only South African coach with a CAF Pro licence, according to the report
Item Reported figure
SAFA initial revised offer to Mosimane R5 million a year
Hugo Broos (reported) R1.4 million a month
Mosimane at Sundowns (reported, 2020) R1.5 million a month

Representatives for Mosimane are understood to be seeking a package comparable to that reportedly afforded to Broos. The NEC's approval signals SAFA's intent, but the association still needs to conclude contractual matters before making Mosimane's appointment official.

Context and implication for Bafana

Mosimane's return would mark a high-profile homecoming for a coach with significant continental pedigree: three CAF Champions League titles and experience in both South African and Egyptian club football. His previous roles with Bafana and his stated determination to finish unfinished business add weight to this appointment should contract terms be agreed.

For SAFA, securing Mosimane would be a statement of intent about the direction of the national team and the resources the association is prepared to commit. The negotiations, and how they are resolved, will be closely watched by supporters, players and stakeholders across South African football.

A formal announcement is expected from SAFA next week once the remaining issues are resolved.
