Emirates has overhauled several booking and protection options to give passengers more flexibility and financial cover when planning travel. The airline said the moves are intended to reduce the stress of changing plans and to provide broader protection should travellers face medical, baggage or conflict-related disruptions while away.
What has changed
The airline announced five principal changes, which include both route-specific and network-wide measures.
- Unlimited free date changes to Dubai: From 10 August 2026, customers flying to Dubai may change travel dates without charge across all fare types. This applies to Economy Saver through Flex fare families, and to Special, Saver and Flex in Business Class.
- Lower refund fees on Dubai routes: Refund fees for tickets to Dubai have been reduced substantially. For Saver fares in Economy, the fee will be US$50, and for Flex fares US$25. Business Class refund fees will be US$50 for Special and Saver fares and US$25 for Flex fares.
- One free date change across the network: Tickets booked from 2 April 2026 qualify for a single complimentary date change on any Emirates route, including itineraries that connect through Dubai.
- 24-hour fare hold: Customers can hold a fare for up to 24 hours without payment while they finalise arrangements.
- Comprehensive Travel Cover: Emirates introduced an insurance product that the airline described as an industry first. It includes reimbursement for medical expenses up to US$25,000 in cases related to conflict cover, unlimited worldwide medical expenses and emergency evacuation, trip cancellation protection, and cover for baggage delay or loss. The policy also offers a free trip extension of up to 30 days and is available at booking across 27 countries.
"Comprehensive Travel Cover" offers conflict-related medical reimbursement of up to US$25,000 and a free trip extension of up to 30 days, the airline said.
What this means for South African travellers
For passengers based in South Africa, the changes provide tangible benefits when booking travel that connects through Dubai or terminates there. Flexible date-change policies reduce the financial penalty of altering travel plans at short notice or reacting to changing personal or work circumstances. Lower refund fees on Dubai routes make cancelling less costly for travellers who need to step away from bookings.
The new insurance cover is notable for including conflict-related medical reimbursement and emergency evacuation without government travel advice restrictions, according to the airline. That may be attractive for travellers to regions where government advice can change quickly or where medical evacuation costs would otherwise be a major exposure.

Practical tips before you book
- Check whether your route to or via Dubai qualifies for the unlimited date-change benefit from 10 August; network free changes apply to bookings from 2 April.
- Compare the airline's insurance with your existing cover — including credit-card or third-party policies — to see if the conflict and evacuation provisions add value for your itinerary.
- Use the 24-hour fare hold to confirm connections, visas or travel companions before committing to payment.
Emirates said these measures form part of an ongoing effort to give customers greater choice and reduce friction across the booking and travel experience.
