Young designer links faith, confidence and community fashion in eMalahleni

An 18-year-old fashion designer from eMalahleni is building a small couture initiative that aims to make high fashion more accessible in the city. Operating under the label YENKOSI_Couture, Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi has been developing his craft since his earliest experiments with needle and thread and plans a bespoke project on 22 August.

Nkosi’s route into fashion combined personal conviction with hands-on practice. He practised needlework to produce his initial garments, starting with just the basics and learning as he went. The designer said those early constraints shaped his understanding of creativity as resourceful rather than resource-heavy.

“I didn’t start with everything I needed. I started with what I had, and that taught me that creativity is not always about having expensive equipment. Sometimes it is about being willing to begin.”

Faith also played a role in his public development. In 2025 Nkosi used a speaking opportunity at BDM Ministries, where he had recently graduated from Sunday school, to connect his spiritual life to his career ambitions. He delivered a talk entitled Presenting Christ in My Career, using fashion as an example of how creativity can form part of a life’s purpose. He later worked with two aspiring models, designing pieces that helped him define his aesthetic and practical approach.

From household sewing to public projects

The designer’s first five outfits were hand-stitched, a fact he highlights to stress that beginnings need not be elaborate. That foundation has grown into plans for a public-facing project later this month, which Nkosi describes as a chance to share the experience of wearing high fashion with other residents.

  • Label: YENKOSI_Couture
  • Age of designer: 18
  • Notable speaking event: BDM Ministries, 2025
  • Upcoming project: Custom couture project on 22 August

Nkosi said his personal experience of wearing high fashion crystallised his ambition: when he first wore such garments he felt the change in confidence and presence, and he wanted to offer that feeling to others. He described fashion as an everyday practice with the power to leave a lasting impression.

For eMalahleni residents, small-scale creative ventures such as this connect to wider themes that matter locally: how young people find work and purpose in a city shaped by energy, mining and service industries, and how local entrepreneurship builds community identity beyond extractive sectors. Nkosi’s work so far is rooted in personal initiative rather than commercial backing, which exemplifies the do-it-yourself path many young creatives take in the region.

What to watch for

Date / Period Milestone
Early career First five outfits hand-sewn
2025 Spoke at BDM Ministries on using creativity in career
22 August Custom couture project under YENKOSI_Couture

As the project approaches, local residents interested in supporting emerging designers may look to events such as Nkosi’s to discover homegrown talent. Small initiatives like this can feed into local markets for occasion wear, modelling opportunities and creative trades—sewing, pattern-making and styling—that create livelihoods outside the city’s dominant industrial economy.

Nkosi’s emphasis on confidence, presentation and starting with what one has reflects a practical approach to creative work in eMalahleni: begin small, connect with community spaces such as churches and local models, and grow through projects that make fashion tangible for people in town.
