The Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) is marking its 20th year as Australia prepares for National Science Week, running from 15–23 August, which this year carries the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all”. Troubled by falling enrolments in mathematics and science, he organised a two-week study trip for Year 9–11 students to the United States, visiting the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and the US Space Camp in Alabama. Inspired by that exposure, Pakakis and colleagues pursued a local, Australian model rather than a simple replica of the US programmes.
They successfully lobbied for support from local members and secured a $6.4 million grant from the Victorian government to build a purpose-designed facility tailored to Australia’s classroom needs. The centre now operates as a specialist STEM hub that aims to provide an alternative to traditional lecture-based teaching by offering practical activities and simulations related to space science.
