The KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Health has placed a nurse on temporary suspension after a video circulating on social media appears to show the health worker physically assaulting a patient at King Dinuzulu Hospital.

Department condemns conduct, promises disciplinary action

In a statement, the department said it “unequivocally condemns this behaviour in the strongest possible terms” and described the conduct captured in the footage as unacceptable and a violation of the core values of the health service. The nurse was removed from duty pending an internal inquiry, the statement said.

“The conduct displayed in the video is completely unacceptable, violates the core values of our healthcare system, and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Health said.

The video, first shared on X (formerly Twitter), shows a nurse standing beside a patient’s bed, pointing and then shoving a finger into the patient’s face before moving on to another bed. The clip has drawn swift criticism from political and health sector actors.

Calls for regulatory and criminal scrutiny

Dr Imran Keeka, the Democratic Alliance’s health spokesperson in the province, said the matter must not end with internal discipline. He said the Democratic Alliance would report the incident to the South African Nursing Council (SANC), which oversees professional conduct and ethics for nurses.

“This is gross professional misconduct,” Dr Keeka said. “The law and every applicable professional process must come down hard on this individual if the allegations are proven.”

Dr Keeka told reporters patients attend public facilities seeking care and dignity and should not be subject to physical or verbal abuse. He said that if the facts in the video are confirmed, the nurse should also face criminal charges.

Implications for patient trust and professional standards

Incidents of alleged abuse in healthcare settings can undermine public confidence in public hospitals and clinics. Regulatory bodies such as SANC administer professional codes and fitness‑to‑practise hearings, while criminal investigations would be handled by the South African Police Service if an offence is reported. The department's temporary suspension will allow its internal disciplinary process to proceed without the staff member remaining on duty.

Healthcare facilities are required to protect patients’ rights and dignity, and complaints against staff must be investigated thoroughly and transparently. This case highlights the mechanisms that exist to address allegations of misconduct and the intersecting roles of the employer, professional regulator and law enforcement.

  • Immediate action: Nurse placed on temporary suspension by KwaZulu‑Natal Health Department.
  • Political response: DA provincial health spokesperson to report the matter to SANC and has called for criminal charges if allegations are substantiated.
  • Regulatory oversight: SANC is responsible for professional conduct and potential disciplinary hearings.

Members of the public who witness or experience mistreatment in health facilities are encouraged to report incidents to facility management, the provincial health department, the South African Police Service or the South African Nursing Council as appropriate. Anyone affected by the events in the video should seek support from a local clinic or social services rather than attempting to manage injuries or trauma alone.

The department said its internal inquiry will determine the next steps in line with labour and disciplinary procedures. The outcome of any disciplinary or regulatory processes has not been made public.
