NASA has committed to releasing the scientific results from every Moon rock, dataset and discovery produced through its Artemis programme to the global scientific community, a move it says is formalised through the Artemis Accords, a set of principles for transparent civil space exploration endorsed by 71 countries.
Workshops aim to turn policy into practice
The agency convened a two-part virtual workshop series that began on 28 July and concluded on 8 September to press one key tenet of the Accords: the timely release of scientific data to the public and to researchers worldwide. The sessions followed an earlier discussion hosted by India's space agency, ISRO, in May on advancing open data practices among signatories.
NASA split its follow‑up into two sessions so technical experts from many time zones could participate. The workshops covered practical and technical aspects of open science — how to make datasets, analysis tools and results discoverable, interoperable and openly accessible — and invited partner agencies to align practices for sharing data from robotic precursors and future crewed lunar missions.
"As we return humans to the Moon, our Artemis efforts will help us unlock the full potential of scientific discovery through transparency, collaboration, and accessibility," said Jacob Bleacher, NASA's chief exploration scientist. "We are making data, tools, and results freely available, and inviting the Artemis Accords partners to innovate with us and share their data as well, accelerating our understanding of lunar processes and laying the groundwork for human space exploration for the Moon, Mars and beyond."
What open science means for lunar research
Open science in this context means several concrete practices. It typically includes:
- timely public release of raw and processed data
- distribution of software tools and algorithms used to analyse data
- clear metadata and documentation so datasets are usable by other teams
- mechanisms to share physical samples and sample metadata where possible
Making these resources available lowers barriers for investigators who lack direct mission involvement and enables cross‑disciplinary study, reanalysis and independent verification — all of which strengthen scientific confidence in findings from lunar exploration.

Why the commitment matters — and its limits
The pledge to share data and samples addresses long‑standing tensions between mission teams, national space agencies and the wider research community. Historically, some missions have released data only after long proprietary periods or kept certain datasets tightly controlled for reasons that include national security, commercial interest or scientific priority.
If implemented fully, the Artemis Accords' open science principle could shorten those proprietary periods and standardise access across participating nations, enabling researchers worldwide to examine lunar materials and remotely acquired observations sooner. That could accelerate progress on questions such as the Moon's geological history, volatile distribution (including water ice), and the effects of long‑duration exposure to the lunar environment.
But the announcement does not remove all constraints. Practical hurdles remain: establishing interoperable data standards, ensuring long‑term archival storage, resolving legal and export controls across jurisdictions, and designing fair processes for sharing physical samples. The workshops were designed to surface those technical and policy issues and begin harmonising approaches among signatories.
For South African and other researchers outside the core mission teams, the success of the Accords will be judged by whether data are not only available but usefully documented and delivered in formats that allow independent analysis. Open access to data is a necessary first step; capacity to use it is the next.
NASA says it will continue to work with international partners to implement agreed practices, and the recent workshops add technical detail to ongoing multilateral conversations about how to make open science a practical norm for lunar exploration.
