Japanese start-up leads UNIDO-backed feasibility study to develop bioplastics in Ukraine

A Japanese green-technology start-up, Green Science Alliance, is leading a United Nations Industrial Development Organization feasibility study, funded by Japan's METI, to develop plant biomass-based biodegradable plastics from organic waste in Ukraine.

Green Science Alliance (GSA), a Japanese green-technology start-up, is the lead grant beneficiary for a United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) feasibility study aimed at developing plant biomass-based biodegradable resins and plastics in Ukraine, the company said.

Project overview and partners

The work forms part of the "Green industrial recovery project for Ukraine through technology transfer and the co-creation of new businesses with Japan's private industries", a programme funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) and implemented by UNIDO. The feasibility study was signed and began on 30 September 2025.

GSA will collaborate with Ukrainian firm TETRAVION K Ltd during the study. The stated objective is to test the applicability of GSA’s technology in Ukraine and to assess its potential contribution to rebuilding a greener industrial base through technology transfer, capacity building and private-sector co-creation.

What the technology aims to do

GSA develops materials and products derived from plant biomass with the goal of replacing petroleum-derived inputs and reducing CO2 emissions and plastic pollution. The company lists a broad range of materials and applications under development, including:

  • resins and plastics
  • coatings, glues and adhesives
  • paints and colours
  • nanocellulose and biochar
  • rubber, textiles and cosmetics (nail products)
  • detergents, plasticisers, lubricants and 3D printing feedstocks

For the Ukraine project specifically, GSA and TETRAVION K Ltd plan to focus on producing bioplastics from biomass and organic waste. Using organic waste feedstocks is intended both to provide local input material and to contribute to broader waste-management and circular-economy goals.

Evidence base and credibility

GSA points to a scientific article by its CEO, Dr Ryohei Mori, which was featured on the front cover of the British journal RSC Sustainability. That article is presented as a summary of the company’s concept to substitute petroleum-derived materials with plant-based alternatives; the feasibility study in Ukraine will test the technology’s applicability in a new industrial and waste context.

Context and potential consequences

The feasibility study sits at the intersection of post-conflict industrial recovery and the global transition to low-carbon materials. If the technology proves transferrable and commercially viable in Ukraine, possible consequences include:

  • local development of a bioplastics industry that uses organic waste streams as feedstock;
  • reduced reliance on imported petroleum-derived plastics and associated CO2 emissions;
  • creation of new private-sector partnerships between Ukrainian and Japanese firms as part of broader reconstruction efforts.

These outcomes remain conditional. A feasibility study assesses technical fit, supply-chain realities, regulatory requirements and market demand; it does not itself guarantee scale-up or commercial adoption. The project’s next steps will be determined by the study’s findings on applicability and contribution to Ukraine’s green industry recovery.

As countries and companies seek circular solutions to plastic pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions, technology-transfer projects such as this test whether innovations developed in one context can be adapted and scaled in another. The UNIDO-METI-supported initiative now underway will provide practical evidence about that potential in Ukraine.
