Blizzard has deployed Patch 36.2.2, bringing balance changes to Hearthstone and Battlegrounds aimed at reducing repetitive strategies and increasing competitive variety, the developer said in its official patch notes on 18 August.
Targets include Maiev, Mug Shaman and other high-impact cards
The update lowers the durability or raises the cost of several cards that have been central to current dominant decks. Among the headline adjustments, Warden Maiev has its Health reduced from 4 to 3, while the Gallagio Goon now costs 2 mana (up from 1) and Mug'zee's Hero Power is delayed to unlock on turn 3.
"Well met! We've been closely monitoring player feedback and gameplay data since the last balance update," the developer wrote, noting an intention to address frustrations with common play patterns and to broaden viable competitive options.
The patch notes underline a balance philosophy that reaches beyond raw stat adjustments. Blizzard said it wants to make counterplay easier and curb early-game snowballing that leaves opponents with limited ways to respond.
Selected changes at a glance
- Warden Maiev — Health reduced from 4 to 3.
- Gallagio Goon — Mana cost increased from 1 to 2; stats adjusted to 2/3.
- Mug'zee — Mug's Magic hero power now unlocks on turn 3, slowing the class's early curve.
- Confront the Tol'vir — Mana reduced from 5 to 4, and effect changed to summon each 1-cost minion you've played rather than replaying 1-cost cards.
- Arcane Tripwire — Damage reduced from 5 split among enemies to 4.
- Jade Guardians — Mana cost increased from 3 to 5.
The changes target both tempo and value engines that can produce lopsided board states early in matches. For example, delaying Mug'zee's access to its hero power is explicitly aimed at preventing the swift snowball that has frustrated many players, while increasing Gallagio Goon's cost and reducing Maiev's health are designed to improve counterplay opportunities.
| Card | Old | New |
|---|---|---|
| Warden Maiev | 1/4 | 1/3 |
| Gallagio Goon | [1 mana] 1/3 | [2 mana] 2/3 |
| Mug'zee | Hero Power (earlier) | Hero Power unlocks on turn 3 |
| Confront the Tol'vir | [5 mana] Replay all 1-cost cards you played | [4 mana] Summon each 1-cost minion you've played |
Why the tweaks matter to players and the local scene
Balance patches in live card games ripple through multiple communities: casual players, ladder competitors, content creators and professional teams. Even modest changes to mana costs or health values can shift which decks are viable and which strategies dominate the meta.
For South African streamers and competitive players who build content around ladder climbs or tournament preparation, the patch means decklists will need testing and potential reworking ahead of autumn events or online cups. Viewers can also expect meta discussions, deck guides and reaction content as influencers assess which archetypes rise or fall.
Blizzard also reminded players to tune into a developer update video on 19 August at 10:00 a.m. PDT for more detail about Hearthstone, Battlegrounds, and upcoming Class Sets. That update will likely expand on design reasoning and may preview future balance goals.
Patch 36.2.2 is live now; players should see the changes reflected when they next start the game. As always with live-service titles, Blizzard said it will continue to monitor the meta and adjust as needed to keep play balanced and varied.
Keep an eye on streamers and community discussion over the next week — shifts in the meta often accelerate after a patch when players start exploring new or revived strategies.
