The Directorate of Skill Development (DSD), Government of Tripura, on Saturday began residential short-term training for 55 beneficiaries under the Returnees Rehabilitation Initiative at the Construction Workers Training Institute Tripura (CWTIT) in Khumulwng. Authorities said the programmes are intended to impart practical skills to improve chances of employment and self-employment for those taking part.

Officials, training partners and beneficiaries present

The courses were inaugurated in the presence of West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, DSD Director Pradeep K, MDC Utpal Debbarma, CWTIT Principal Er Sumit Majumdar and Biswamohan Debbarma, alongside trainers and participating candidates, according to an official release.

DSD officials said the residential programmes are organised by the Directorate in coordination with concerned training providers and are being conducted at CWTIT to ensure a combination of classroom instruction and practical exposure. Boarding, lodging, classrooms and workshop facilities have been arranged at the institute, and logistics are being provided as per the approved norms of the DSD.

Courses, duration and enrollment

Two job roles are being covered under the initiative: a Self Employed Tailor course run by Tripura Small Industry Corporation Ltd (TSICL), and a Brick Mason course conducted by CWTIT, Khumulwng. Course details provided by the DSD are:

  • Self Employed Tailor — 25 candidates; 60 days duration; conducted by TSICL.
  • Brick Mason — 30 candidates; 75 days duration; conducted by CWTIT, Khumulwng.

In all, 55 beneficiaries are attending the two residential programmes. The Directorate has emphasised regular attendance, hands-on learning and quality training so that trainees can apply the skills for wage employment or to set up small enterprises.

Support and logistics at the training institute

Authorities said they have provided accommodation, practical training facilities, boarding and lodging, and other logistical support at CWTIT to ensure smooth conduct of programmes. Boarding and lodging arrangements follow DSD-approved norms, the release stated.

Policy context and intended outcomes

The programmes form part of the state government’s broader efforts towards skill development, livelihood generation and socio-economic rehabilitation of returnees, the release said. By focusing on trades with immediate local demand — tailoring and masonry — the DSD aims to provide marketable skills that can lead to either employment with contractors and establishments or independent micro-enterprises.

Officials highlighted practical training and consistent attendance as key to converting the short-duration courses into sustainable livelihoods. The institute’s workshops and hands-on sessions are intended to familiarise trainees with tools, work-site safety and quality standards expected in the construction and tailoring sectors.

What beneficiaries can expect

  • Practical, employment-oriented instruction combining classroom theory with workshop practice.
  • Provision of boarding and lodging for the residential duration as per DSD norms.
  • Access to trainers and equipment at CWTIT and partner-provider facilities.

While the official release outlined the structure and support for the courses, it did not specify post-training placement guarantees or seed support for self-employment. Participants and local officials will likely monitor outcomes such as placement rates, micro-enterprise formation and income changes once the courses conclude.

The DSD said the training is expected to strengthen rehabilitation efforts by providing returnees with practical skills aligned to local labour markets, thereby aiding their reintegration and socio-economic empowerment.
