Agartala: The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will undertake a state-wide review of its booth-level organisation from August 18, party leaders announced on Monday, in a move billed as preparation for the impending village council elections.
One-week exercise to map and plug gaps
The exercise, directed by State BJP president Abhishek Debroy through a notification of the State Executive Committee, is scheduled to conclude on August 24. District presidents have been instructed to ensure verification teams complete checks in their respective jurisdictions within the seven-day timeframe, the party said.
According to the notification, workers engaged in booth verification will be assigned only booth-related duties during the period so they can focus on assessing grassroots strength rather than being burdened with other organisational or administrative tasks.
Structure of verification teams
A five-member State Booth Verification Team will oversee the programme. Tapas Bhattacharya, state vice-president, will convene the panel. Named co-convenors include Nabadal Banik, Bhumika Nanda Reang, party chairman Abhijit Deb and former district president Debabrata Bhattacharjee, the party said.
| Role | Name |
|---|---|
| State convenor | Tapas Bhattacharya |
| Co-convenor | Nabadal Banik |
| Co-convenor | Bhumika Nanda Reang |
| Co-convenor | Abhijit Deb |
| Co-convenor | Debabrata Bhattacharjee |
Below the state team, monitoring mechanisms will operate at district and mandal levels. Each district is to form a three-member verification committee comprising a convenor and two co-convenors. At mandal level, a district-appointed in-charge will similarly constitute a three-member team to carry out field checks.
What teams will do in the field
- Evaluate functioning of individual booths and identify inactive or weak units.
- Recommend induction of fresh workers where existing units are deficient.
- Assign clear responsibilities to booth-level workers to improve grassroots outreach.
The party has emphasised dedicated manpower for the verification exercise, reflecting a concerted push to shore up booth-level teams in the run-up to village council polls.
Context and likely objectives
Booth-level strength is a core organisational metric in India’s electoral politics: active booth committees are tasked with voter contact, mobilisation and local issue management. By seeking to identify dormant booths and reassign workers, the BJP aims to ensure every booth has an operational team with defined duties, the notification said.
State leaders framed the drive as a preparedness measure rather than a public recruitment exercise. Party sources said similar verification drives are common before local body elections to plug gaps and sharpen ground-level coordination.
Timeline and accountability
The tight seven-day schedule underlines the urgency in readying the organisational machinery. District presidents will be accountable for completion in their areas, while the state-level panel will monitor progress and consolidate findings, the party notification stated.
Observers say the outcome of such verification work can influence candidate selection, campaign logistics and booth-level voter outreach during the village council polls. For the BJP, a disciplined booth structure is instrumental in translating party strategy into votes at the grassroots.
No comments were immediately available from opposition parties on the BJP’s verification exercise. The party has not publicly detailed how it will act on the teams’ recommendations after August 24.
For voters and local activists, the verification window may bring targeted contact from party workers and organisers in the coming week as committees map and reactivate booth units across Tripura.
