Dharmanagar, 24 September 2026: Tripura State Election Commissioner Dr P K Chakraborty on Thursday reviewed election preparedness and security arrangements in North Tripura district ahead of the upcoming ADC (Autonomous District Council) Village Committee elections. He was accompanied by officiating Director General of Police G S Rao.
Officials assess logistics, deployment and communication challenges
The review meeting, held at the North Tripura district headquarters in Dharmanagar, was attended by senior administrative and police officials, including Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers, election observers, SDPOs and the District Superintendent of Police, according to an official report.
Discussion at the meeting focused on key aspects of poll conduct: the dispatch of polling personnel from dispatch centres to polling stations, security arrangements at polling booths, voter awareness activities, monitoring mechanisms for polling day and the return of polling personnel to receiving centres after voting.
The police administration briefed the Commission on the planned deployment of security forces, area domination operations, arrangements for security at polling stations and communication systems to be used during polling. Officials also flagged operational constraints posed by terrain, road conditions and limited mobile network connectivity in parts of the district.
"The Commission was satisfied with the election preparedness in North Tripura and expressed confidence that the polls would be conducted in a free and peaceful atmosphere," the State Election Commissioner said after the meeting.
Officiating DGP G S Rao described the preparations as broadly satisfactory while saying further measures had been suggested. He noted that several polling stations are located in remote and interior areas where rainfall and poor roads could hamper movement of polling personnel and security forces.
"Preparations reviewed during the meeting were satisfactory, although some suggestions had been made regarding further measures," Rao said, identifying access and communication as potential constraints in some pockets.
Key operational items discussed
- Movement of polling personnel between dispatch/receiving centres and polling stations.
- Deployment and patrolling plans by police and central forces to ensure area domination.
- Voter awareness and monitoring arrangements for polling day.
- Contingency planning for heavy rainfall, poor road conditions and limited mobile connectivity.
Officials were reported to have examined arrangements to ensure that polling teams can reach remote booths in a timely manner and return safely after poll duties. The meeting also covered communication protocols among district control rooms, police units and election staff to facilitate rapid response to any incident on polling day.
Why the review matters
North Tripura's mix of interior habitations and monsoon-prone access routes poses logistical challenges for electoral administration. Ensuring the timely movement of trained polling personnel, secure transport of election materials and reliable communication links are essential for the Commission to meet its obligation of conducting free and fair local body elections.
By reviewing preparations on the ground with district-level officials, the State Election Commission aims to pre-empt operational bottlenecks and reinforce coordination between the civil administration and police. The presence of senior police leadership underscores the emphasis on security and area domination to deter violence or intimidation during the polls.
The meeting's outcomes are intended to be implemented by the district administration and police ahead of polling. The Commission said it remained confident that, with the suggested measures in place, the elections would proceed peacefully.
What voters and polling staff should note
District authorities are expected to finalise and publicise polling station lists, duty rosters for polling personnel, and contact details for control rooms. Voters in remote areas may see increased patrolling and temporary communications arrangements on polling day. Polling personnel may be deployed from centralised dispatch hubs to reach interior booths and will be required to report to receiving centres after completing duties.
| Item | Focus |
|---|---|
| Personnel movement | Dispatch/receiving centres; transport to remote booths |
| Security | Area domination, patrolling, polling station security |
| Communications | Control room links; contingency for mobile network gaps |
The Commission has asked district officials to intensify voter awareness drives and ensure that all election observers and returning officers have clear protocols for polling day monitoring. Further instructions are expected to be issued as the poll date approaches.
No timeframe for the final polling schedule was disclosed in the report of the meeting. The review, however, signals heightened administrative focus on delivering the ADC Village Committee elections across North Tripura in a secure and orderly manner.
