Security beefed up across Tripura ahead of Independence Day; BSF, TSR on alert

Tripura police, BSF and Tripura State Rifles have intensified checks at public places and put forces on alert for Independence Day, officials said, citing last year’s foiled militant plot in Kanchanpur.

Agartala: Security has been tightened across Tripura ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, a senior police officer said on Thursday, with checks at public places and paramilitary units placed on alert despite no specific threat being reported.

Forces deployed and vulnerable sites under watch

Inspector General (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper told reporters that police teams were conducting systematic inspections of bus stands, railway stations and other locations considered vulnerable to untoward incidents during the 15 August observances.

The Border Security Force (BSF), state police and the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) have been kept on alert, Ipper said, as part of a coordinated security plan for the period.

“Police always remain alert. Last year they thwarted a major militant attack at Kanchanpur in North Tripura district by arresting seven to eight armed cadres with grenades and arms hours before the Independence Day celebrations,”

Ipper recalled the Kanchanpur episode from the previous year, which authorities said involved the seizure of explosives and weapons and arrests of several armed cadres shortly before the state’s Independence Day functions.

Main event in Agartala, heightened arrangements

Elaborate security arrangements have been made in Agartala, particularly at the Assam Rifles ground, where the main Independence Day programme will be held. Chief Minister Manik Saha is scheduled to unfurl the national flag at the ground in the presence of cabinet colleagues and senior officials, officials said.

Ipper said that checks would continue around venues hosting official events and public gatherings to ensure peaceful celebrations and minimise disruption.

What authorities are screening

  • Routine screening of travellers and luggage at bus stands and railway stations
  • Patrols and checkpoints near public venues and sensitive installations
  • Coordination among BSF, TSR and local police for rapid response

Officials emphasised visible patrolling and surveillance at likely congregation points, while investigative and quick-reaction units remain on standby to respond to any incident.

Context and public advisories

The tightening follows the Kanchanpur arrests cited by Ipper, which state authorities have presented as justification for continued vigilance around major public events. While no fresh intelligence of a planned attack has been disclosed, the precautionary posture reflects a focus on deterrence and early detection.

Residents were advised to cooperate with security checks and report any suspicious activity or unattended items to law enforcement agencies. Police asked citizens to carry valid identification while attending public events and follow directions issued by security personnel at venues.

Agency Role
Tripura Police Local checks, venue security, rapid response
BSF Border and perimeter security, reinforcement of ground deployments
Tripura State Rifles Counter-insurgency support, specialised patrols

Police officials reiterated that the heightened measures aim to ensure that Independence Day festivities proceed without incident and that public safety is maintained across the state.

The state government and security agencies have not released any additional travel restrictions or major changes to planned events, but said they will continue to update the public if new information emerges.

Authorities also indicated they would maintain the alert posture through the period of national celebrations and the subsequent days, to guard against any attempts to disrupt public order.
