Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said the state has recorded "phenomenal growth" during the past eight years, with the gross state domestic product (GSDP) doubling in six years and per capita income approaching the national average, according to a statement issued after his Independence Day address.
Growth claims and development initiatives
Speaking at the state-level Independence Day function held at the Assam Rifles ground here, Saha said his government has been working "relentlessly to develop the socio-economic condition of the people" and highlighted a series of flagship programmes implemented to bolster livelihoods, connectivity, health and rural development.
“Several flagship programmes have been implemented successfully in the state to boost the socio-economic condition of the people. The GSDP has been doubled in just six years, and the per capita income has almost reached the national average,” he said.
The chief minister also noted a favourable law-and-order environment, saying the state "has largely remained peaceful" and that the lowest crime in two decades was reported last year. He linked improved public safety to rising investor interest in Tripura.
Investment and recognitions
Referring to the recently held Destination Tripura: Business Summit, Saha said the event generated interest amounting to ₹1.32 lakh crore in investment proposals and drew participation from foreign missions, with representatives of 10 foreign embassies attending the conclave, the statement said.
He said the state government’s work has received national recognition, claiming that Tripura earned 360 national and regional awards across sectors ranging from agriculture to rural development and Panchayati Raj.
Health, rehabilitation and other measures
Saha highlighted a memorandum of understanding signed with AIIMS, New Delhi to strengthen healthcare services at the GBP Hospital in Agartala, saying the move will improve the state's overall health service delivery system.
On social rehabilitation, he stated that 6,935 Bru families who were repatriated from Mizoram have been rehabilitated in Tripura under an accord with the Centre intended to provide a durable solution to their displacement.
- GSDP: Claimed to have doubled in six years.
- Investment interest: ₹1.32 lakh crore worth of proposals reported after the business summit.
- Rehabilitation: 6,935 Bru families repatriated and rehabilitated under a central accord.
Context and implications
Saha’s remarks at the Independence Day function outlined achievements his government attributes to its eight-year tenure. The doubling of GSDP is presented as a central economic indicator; however, the statement did not provide a baseline year or specific GSDP figures to independently verify the rate of growth or the per capita income comparison with the national average.
Investment proposals announced at business summits often represent expressions of interest and memoranda rather than signed, binding commitments. The chief minister’s reference to participation by foreign embassy representatives signals international attention but does not by itself confirm the finalisation of investments or timelines for implementation.

What officials said
The chief minister emphasised the government’s focus on inclusive development and described improvements on the law-and-order front. The statement said the administration’s initiatives cover agriculture, rural development and Panchayati Raj schemes, contributing to the awards cited.
No additional quantitative breakdowns, sector-wise GSDP contributions, timelines for the investment proposals, or details of the AIIMS collaboration were provided in the statement accompanying Saha’s address.
Officials and stakeholders will need to produce fiscal data, signed investment agreements and implementation plans to substantiate the claims and assess the material impact on employment, infrastructure and public services across the state.
Agartala was the venue for the state-level Independence Day programme where the chief minister made these announcements.
