State fixes September 30 deadline for road works before Durga Puja
The Tripura administration has mandated that all scheduled road maintenance be finished by 30 September to ensure improved connectivity and safer travel during Durga Puja, Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte said on Monday. The direction followed a high-level review chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha earlier this month.
Officials from the PWD's Roads & Buildings wing (R&B), PWD (PMGSY), the National Highways wing and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) attended the meeting held at the War Room of the Tripura Institute of Information Technology (TIFT) in Agartala to assess progress and firm up district-level action plans.
Gitte said follow-up inspections took place on August 10 to monitor progress after the August 8 review. He told officials to accelerate remaining works, enforce quality control measures and prioritise routes essential for festival movement and emergency services.
Targets and stretches
The maintenance programme spans state and national road networks managed by different agencies. The PWD divisions have been assigned the majority of the work:
- PWD (R&B): maintenance on 1,006 roads covering 1,622 km.
- PWD (PMGSY): maintenance on 119 roads covering 665 km.
- PWD (NH): maintenance on 32 national highway stretches covering 377 km.
Under NHIDCL, repair activities are in progress on several important highway stretches, including the 16-km Champaknagar–Nalgaria rail-bridge stretch of NH-08 in West Tripura. Work is also underway on the 38-km Khowai–Agartala section of NH-108B, the 80.2-km Khowai–Kailashahar stretch of NH-208 and the 105.9-km Churaibari–Agartala segment of NH-08.
| Agency | Roads/Stretch | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| PWD (R&B) | Various state roads | 1,622 km |
| PWD (PMGSY) | Rural/PMGSY roads | 665 km |
| PWD (NH) | National highway stretches | 377 km |
| NHIDCL | Key NH stretches (NH-08, NH-108B, NH-208) | Multiple segments — ongoing |
Weather, funding and inspection plan
Gitte noted that unseasonal early rains since March had damaged surfaces at several locations and delayed maintenance activities by contributing to pothole formation. Despite the weather-related setbacks, he said sufficient funds were available to carry out the required repairs.
To ensure work quality and timely completion, the PWD secretary directed a regimented inspection schedule. Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers were ordered to conduct regular site inspections, with particular focus on roads that connect district or subdivisional headquarters, bus terminals, railway stations, hospitals and major Durga Puja pandals.
Why the deadline matters
Durga Puja draws large crowds across Tripura and places heavy demand on transport arteries. Ensuring motorable roads before the festival is intended to reduce travel disruptions, improve access for emergency vehicles and support the logistics of festival installations and visitor movements. The deadline also signals the government’s emphasis on visible infrastructure delivery ahead of a major cultural event.
What to expect for commuters
- Priority repairs on roads serving district headquarters, bus stands and hospitals.
- Ongoing inspections by PWD engineers to monitor quality and progress.
- Work on key national highway stretches to continue under NHIDCL while adhering to the state deadline for maintenance completion.
Officials did not provide a detailed public schedule of lane closures or diversion plans for the remaining works. Commuters and festival organisers are advised to keep abreast of local district administration notices and traffic advisories as works proceed.
Tripura’s push to complete the maintenance drive within a fixed timeframe highlights the administration’s effort to balance construction challenges with festival preparedness, while officials continue to monitor weather impacts and field-level progress ahead of the September 30 deadline.
