The RCMP’s Major Crime Unit has been dispatched to Fort St. James, B.C., after a 77-year-old man was found with life-threatening injuries at a home early Monday, and later died of those injuries, authorities said.
What happened
Frontline officers were called to a disturbance at a residence in the 800 block of BC Spruce Road at about 2:40 a.m. on Sept. 14, according to a police statement. Responding officers located a man suffering serious trauma and he was transported to hospital by B.C. Emergency Health Services in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Investigation under way
The RCMP said the matter is being treated as a homicide and that investigators with the provincial Major Crime Unit are travelling to Fort St. James to take over the inquiry. Police said the suspect or suspects were no longer at the scene when officers arrived.
“Anyone with any information about the man’s death who has yet to speak with investigators is urged to contact police immediately,” said Staff Sgt. Kris Clark of the RCMP, who added the incident appears to be isolated and a targeted one.
Police have not released additional details on the victim’s identity, a possible motive or whether any arrests have been made. They described the investigation as being in its early stages and asked anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Local context and public impact
Fort St. James is a small community in northern British Columbia. Incidents of serious violence are relatively uncommon in many such towns, and a homicide inquiry led by the Major Crime Unit indicates the RCMP is allocating specialised resources to the case.
Police messaging stressed that, at this stage, the event appears to have been directed at the victim rather than random. That assessment may shape both investigative priorities and public communications as detectives work to establish motive, sequence of events and whether more than one person was involved.

Detectives will likely canvass the neighbourhood, review any available surveillance or doorbell camera footage, conduct interviews and seek forensic evidence at the scene. Staff Sgt. Kris Clark’s appeal for witnesses suggests investigators believe members of the public may hold information that could assist the probe.
Anyone with information who has not yet spoken with police was asked to contact the RCMP immediately, the force said.
The investigation remains active and ongoing; further details will be released by police as they become available.
