EASTERN CAPE — A midday exchange of gunfire between police and suspected robbers in Zwelitsha on 22 August 2026 left one suspect dead, one wounded and three others in custody, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said on Saturday.
Police tracked suspects after Qonce robbery, statement says
SAPS said the operation followed a reported robbery at a store in Qonce earlier in the day. According to the police statement, intelligence gathered after the Qonce incident led operational teams to a location in Zwelitsha where they encountered the five suspects at about 13:00.
“Acting on intelligence gathered after the Qonce robbery, police operational teams tracked the suspects to a location in Zwelitsha,” the statement said.
The statement says officers were fired on after they arrived and that members returned fire in what police described as self‑defence and in accordance with SAPS use‑of‑force protocols. During the exchange one of the suspects was fatally wounded. A second suspect suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital under police guard and remains in custody, SAPS said. Three further suspects were arrested at the scene without further incident. No police personnel were reported injured.
Independent oversight and continuing investigation
In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has been notified and will conduct an independent inquiry into the death. Ipid routinely investigates incidents where people die following SAPS action.
The police statement praised the members involved for a prompt response, saying the operation “neutralised an immediate threat and ensured that all suspects were accounted for”. SAPS added that the investigation into the robbery and the shootout is continuing.

Context and legal process
Any death resulting from police action triggers an independent investigation by Ipid to determine whether the use of force was justified and consistent with legal and procedural standards. That inquiry runs separately to the criminal investigation into the alleged robbery, which SAPS said will continue.
Under South African law, members of the security services may use force where reasonably necessary for self‑defence or to prevent the commission of an offence, but the proportionality and necessity of force are matters for subsequent review by oversight bodies and, where applicable, the courts. The outcome of Ipid’s probe will determine whether any administrative or criminal charges are recommended against police members involved.
The wounded suspect’s condition and whether charges have been formally laid in relation to the Qonce robbery were not provided in the police statement. Further details, including identities of those involved and the progress of the criminal case, will depend on ongoing enquiries and statements from SAPS and Ipid.
The incident follows a string of high‑profile shootings in the Eastern Cape that have heightened public concern about violent crime and the use of firearms in the province. Police say intelligence‑led operations remain central to their efforts to disrupt armed robbery gangs, but they also face scrutiny from oversight institutions and civil society whenever operations result in fatalities.
SAPS said it would continue to pursue suspects linked to the Qonce robbery and urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist investigators.
