Acting SAPS commissioner orders probe after K9 Sky injured at police facility

The Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant‑General Puleng Dimpane, has appointed a senior officer to investigate the circumstances surrounding the injury of a South African Police Service K9 named Sky at one of the service’s training and veterinary facilities, the SAPS said on 8 September 2026.

Investigation ordered into care, accommodation and procedures

The SAPS statement said the inquiry will examine Sky’s accommodation, supervision, care and compliance with applicable procedures and standards. The precise nature and extent of the dog’s injuries were not disclosed; Sky is currently receiving veterinary treatment, the police added.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe told reporters that Sky had previously been based at a K9 unit in Limpopo and had a documented history of escaping from kennels there. Because of that record, Sky had been kept at the veterinary facility while the process to find a new, suitable owner was under way.

"Sky is no longer an operational K9 and had a history of escaping from the kennels at her previous K9 base in Limpopo. A decision was therefore taken to accommodate her at the veterinary facility while arrangements were being made for her placement with a suitable new owner. The donation process was still underway when the incident occurred."

The SAPS also posted the announcement on its official Twitter account, noting that a senior officer had been appointed to lead the probe. The service did not name the officer in its initial release.

The appointment of a senior officer signals the SAPS leadership regards the matter as serious enough to merit an internal review.
