Relief mobilisation from Tiruchirappalli for Keralam flood victims
Tiruchirappalli volunteers and multiple voluntary organisations have organised a collection drive and dispatched nearly 10 tonnes of relief materials to areas of Keralam affected by persistent heavy monsoon rainfall, officials and organisers said on Monday. The supplies are aimed at families displaced by flooding and those sheltering in relief camps in districts such as Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam.
The initiative, coordinated by social activist and environmentalist Manoj Dharmar, gathered contributions from the public as well as from businesses and institutional collection points across the city. Tiruchirappalli District Revenue Officer Balaji flagged off the van carrying the packed consignments on Sunday in the presence of volunteers and organisers, according to the organisers.
Items collected and packing
Volunteers focused on supplying items for immediate needs in relief camps. The drive assembled a mixture of personal-care items, clothing, dry groceries and sanitation supplies. Organisers reported the following categories of donations:
- Personal-care and clothing: sanitary napkins, diapers, nightwear, new T-shirts and shorts for children, biscuits.
- Groceries (non-perishable): 5 kg rice packs, green gram, wheat flour, rava, toor dal, chickpeas and sugar.
- Spices and kitchen staples: chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, sambar powder, coriander powder, mustard and coffee powder; one-litre packs of cooking oil.
- Sanitation and disinfectants: bleaching powder and other disinfectants.
The packed consignment that left Tiruchirappalli weighed close to 10 tonnes, organisers said. Volunteers emphasised that the selection of items was guided by the immediate needs reported from relief camps and by the objective of sending supplies that could be readily distributed and stored.
Collection centres across the city
Organisers designated several collection centres in Tiruchirappalli to facilitate donations from residents and businesses. The primary collection points included healthcare and commercial outlets, providing easy access for the public to contribute.
| Collection Centre | Location |
|---|---|
| Kauvery Hospital (branch) | Cantonment |
| Kauvery Hospital (branch) | Thennur |
| VDart office | Mannarpuram |
| Kauvery Clinic | Ariyamangalam |
| Aswin Sweets outlets | Chatram Bus Stand, Kattur, Vayalur Road, KK Nagar |
Several civic-minded residents and organisations used these centres to drop off goods during the drive. Organisers said the choice of multiple, familiar locations helped widen participation and sped up collection.
Context and immediate needs in Keralam
Persistent monsoon rains have led to flooding and extensive waterlogging across parts of Keralam. Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam have been among the worst-affected districts, and organisers noted that more than 7,000 individuals had been relocated to relief camps by local authorities and relief agencies. Heavy rainfall has also disrupted road communications and normal life in low-lying regions, increasing the urgency for targeted relief items.
Organisers in Tiruchirappalli said they coordinated with volunteers who had contacts in the affected districts to ensure that supplies would reach relief camps and families most in need. The dispatched vehicle is scheduled for onward distribution by local agencies in Keralam, the organisers added.
Community leaders in Tiruchirappalli described the drive as an expression of regional solidarity. By pooling resources from hospitals, clinics, commercial outlets and the public, the city’s volunteers aimed to provide immediate relief while local authorities in Kerala continue longer-term recovery and rehabilitation work.
Officials and volunteers indicated that further assistance drives could be organised depending on evolving needs in the flood-affected districts and on feedback from distribution partners in Keralam.
