Madurai, 16 August — The Madurai Railway Division has reported overall earnings of ₹490.16 crore for the first four months of the current year, an increase of 8.28% compared with the same period last year, Divisional Railway Manager Om Prakash Meena said on Saturday during the Independence Day event at the divisional office.
Passenger receipts and goods traffic
The DRM said passenger earnings rose to ₹328.57 crore, registering growth of 13.34% over the corresponding period last year. Goods earnings for the period were ₹125.44 crore, while sundry receipts stood at ₹11.64 crore. Other coaching earnings amounted to ₹24.5 crore, reflecting 23% growth over the previous year.
“Overall earnings of Madurai Railway Division in the first four months of the current year was ₹490.16 crore,” Om Prakash Meena said.
The division carried a reported 17.12 million passengers during the period and recorded freight loading of 9.91 lakh tonnes. The DRM highlighted that an emerging regular freight flow — movement of electric vehicles by VinFast from Milavittan to Ballabhgarh on 3 August — will add to future freight earnings.
Capacity expansion and special services
Officials pointed to capacity and service enhancements during the period. The Madurai–Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express had its coach composition increased from eight to 16 coaches, substantially enlarging passenger capacity. The division also operated 47 Train-on-Demand special services to meet higher travel demand during summer vacations and festivals.

Station redevelopment and safety works
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the DRM said 17 stations in the Madurai Division are being upgraded with sanctioned works valued at ₹292.52 crore. Four stations — Karaikudi, Sholavandan, Manapparai and Srivilliputtur — were commissioned on March 1 with enhanced passenger amenities. Works at Palani, Paramakudi and Ambasamudram have been completed and are ready for inauguration, while the remaining stations are progressing rapidly.
| Project | Estimated cost | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Madurai Junction redevelopment | ₹413 crore | Work progressing |
| Rameswaram station redevelopment | ₹112 crore | Advanced stage, nearing completion |
| Tirunelveli station redevelopment | ₹100 crore | Project taken up |
For safety, the DRM reported that nine previously non-interlocked level crossing gates have been interlocked to improve train and road-user safety. Work is in progress at 51 other non-interlocked level crossings. Closed-circuit television systems have been installed at 100 non-interlocked level crossing gates with the feed routed to station masters' rooms.
Local implications and outlook
Railway officials said the combination of higher passenger receipts, expanded train capacity and freight initiatives is improving the Madurai Division’s revenue profile. The commissioning of upgraded stations under ABSS is expected to raise passenger convenience and may further boost ticket receipts. The progress on major redevelopment projects at Madurai Junction and Rameswaram could also reshape passenger handling and commercial potential once completed.
During 2026, the Railway Protection Force in the division carried out enforcement operations: arrests and recoveries were reported as part of routine security work, the DRM noted at the ceremony.
Madurai residents and regular rail users are likely to notice changes in station ambience and increased service capacity in the coming months, as redevelopment and interlocking works advance.
