Heavy rain, waterlogging prompt rescue operations in Prayagraj
Prayagraj experienced severe waterlogging after heavy rains that led to water entering residential premises and disrupted train operations, authorities said, as the Uttar Pradesh government stepped up flood relief and rescue measures in affected districts.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in several districts, including Prayagraj, where search-and-rescue teams are engaged following reported drowning incidents, the state government said in an official release. Train services were temporarily affected at some stations as lines and approaches were waterlogged, railway officials reported.
State intensifies safety and relief measures
Alongside flood operations, the Uttar Pradesh administration said it is continuing with its ‘Mission Safe Future’ campaign, focussing on the fitness of school vehicles and the background verification of their drivers. The Transport Department is carrying out inspections across the state to ensure safe transportation for children amid the heightened focus on safety and disaster preparedness.
"Priority is being given to checking the fitness of school vehicles and verifying the drivers responsible for transporting students," Additional Transport Commissioner (Enforcement) KD Singh Gaur said, according to the press release.
Scope of inspections and enforcement actions
The Transport Department release provided figures on the scale of school transport in Uttar Pradesh and the results of recent inspections. As of 13 August, the department recorded 19,680 schools and a total of 82,259 school vehicles operating across the state, comprising vehicles registered in school names and those contracted by schools.
| Category | Number |
|---|---|
| Schools registered | 19,680 |
| Vehicles registered in schools' names | 74,337 |
| Contracted vehicles | 8,022 |
| Total school vehicles | 82,259 |
Inspections under this and related campaigns have identified a substantial number of vehicles that did not meet prescribed fitness standards. The release said 6,066 school vehicles were found unfit during inspections, and notices were issued against them. Enforcement teams also issued challans to 1,072 school vehicles for various violations.
Local impact and ongoing response
- Rescue and relief: NDRF teams are conducting search-and-rescue operations in Prayagraj following reports of drowning incidents; local administration has been asked to coordinate evacuation and relief where required.
- Transport disruption: Train operations at some stations experienced temporary interruptions due to waterlogged tracks and approaches; railway authorities are monitoring the situation and restoring services as conditions permit.
- Safety checks: The Transport Department has intensified fitness checks on school vehicles and is verifying driver backgrounds as part of broader safety measures.
State officials said the combined measures aim to strengthen preparedness and ensure timely response during emergencies. The dual focus on flood relief and school-transport safety highlights administrative priorities during the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall can exacerbate risks to life and mobility.
Local residents in low-lying neighbourhoods were advised by authorities to take precautions, move to safer locations if necessary and follow guidance from district disaster management teams. The administration has asked district officials to keep communication lines open and to provide continuous updates to relief agencies and the public.
Railway and disaster-response teams have been instructed to co‑ordinate closely with district administrations to prioritise rescue operations, clear waterlogged sections and restore essential services as quickly as possible.
Officials emphasised that enforcement action on school-transport fitness and driver verification will continue alongside rescue work, with the objective of preventing avoidable harm to children and other commuters during the monsoon period.
