Large student contingents, cultural acts mark Rohtak celebrations
Approximately 1,600 students drawn from 16 schools presented coordinated physical displays and cultural items during the Independence Day function held at Rajeev Gandhi Sports Stadium in Rohtak on Saturday. The event combined mass exercise sequences, regional cultural performances and a formal flag-hoisting ceremony presided over by Cooperation and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma.
Students performed mass exercises set to band music, including Lezim drills and routines with dumbbells. The cultural segment that followed involved several schools and conveyed themes ranging from the freedom struggle to the state’s sporting achievements and the nation’s cultural diversity.
- Participants: Around 1,600 students from 16 schools.
- Cultural acts: Performances by students of eight schools; Model School presented an orchestra piece.
- Officials: Dr Arvind Sharma unfurled the tricolour; ADC Narendra Kumar and Parade Commander DSP Tanuj Sharma accompanied the inspection in an open jeep.
“I have met the Union Railway Minister and urged him to extend the train’s route from Sonepat to Delhi,”
In his address, Dr Sharma linked the celebrations to recent national developments, saying the country was progressing rapidly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referring to the inaugural run of India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, which is scheduled to operate between Jind and Sonepat. He said he had asked the Union Railway Minister to consider extending that service to Delhi.
The minister also highlighted the state government’s focus on inclusive development. He said Haryana was continuing to advance on economic, social and industrial fronts and emphasised the need to ensure that development benefits reached all segments of society, including the poor, farmers, women and youth.
Organisers said the cultural programme showcased a variety of themes and disciplines: Mallakhamb and yoga demonstrations, portrayals of historical freedom movements, performances celebrating sporting accomplishments, and presentations illustrating the cultural heritage of different Indian states. Students and other participants were later felicitated, and the ceremony included recognition of employees and citizens noted for outstanding contributions in various fields.
Local context and immediate outcomes
The scale of student participation underlines continued engagement by Rohtak schools with civic observances and the use of public stadia for community events. The presence of a state minister and the formal parade inspection reinforced official involvement in the celebration and provided a platform for the minister to reiterate administrative priorities and recent national technological milestones.

School coordinators and local organisers used the occasion both to celebrate national unity and to present curricular co-curricular skills such as Mallakhamb and yoga to a larger audience. The felicitation of participants and employees also served as local recognition for contributions in education, sports and public service.
No administrative changes or new project approvals were announced at the event apart from the minister’s statement requesting extension of the hydrogen train route. Further details on that proposal would depend on decisions by the Union Railway Ministry, which were not disclosed at the function.
The ceremony followed standard protocols for Independence Day events in the city: flag hoisting, parade inspection, youth and school performances and an address by the presiding official. The combination of mass drills, cultural tableaux and official remarks is consistent with past civic observances in Rohtak.
