A 25-year-old man from Mahadev Mohalla, Kurukshetra, was allegedly stabbed to death in Frankfurt, Germany, police and family sources said on Thursday, leaving relatives in the district distraught and seeking details about the circumstances of the killing.
The deceased has been identified as Vishu Sharma. His family said they were informed of his death early on Wednesday morning after Vishu's roommate, identified as Gaurav, called them from Germany.
“Gaurav, who was staying with my son, called us and told us that Vishu had died. We then contacted a relative who lives in Germany and asked him to go there. He sent us a photograph, and we confirmed that it was Vishu,” the youth's father Neeraj Sharma said.
What the family says happened
According to the family account, three men allegedly called Vishu outside his room and attacked him with a knife. Gaurav is said to have rushed Vishu to a hospital, but the youth did not survive. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, the family added.
The family said they were given the information by the roommate and later confirmed Vishu's identity from a photograph sent by a relative living in Germany. No official statement from German authorities or the Indian consulate in Frankfurt has been cited in the family report.
Background: migration and costs to the family
Vishu had left India for Portugal in November 2022 seeking better employment opportunities, the family said. After spending about a year in Portugal, he moved to France where he underwent six months of military training and subsequently served in the French Army for about a year, according to relatives.
The family stated they spent around ₹20 lakh and sold a plot of land to support his move abroad.

Local response and next steps
Relatives in Kurukshetra said they are awaiting formal communication from Indian authorities about repatriation of the body and details from German investigators. The motive and the identity of the alleged assailants remain unclear from information provided by the family.
The case raises questions commonly encountered by families of migrants: verification of reports received overseas, access to official consular support, and the financial and emotional costs borne by families to enable migration. The family has not provided documentation of consular contact or hospital records to confirm timing or official cause of death.
