Two separate incidents after heavy rainfall

Heavy rains on Friday evening led to two deadly incidents in Arunachal Pradesh: a major landslide at a road cutting site in Upper Subansiri district and a flash flood at an Army camp in Dibang Valley district. Officials confirmed that four people died in the landslide and five Army personnel remain missing after the flash flood, with search-and-rescue efforts continuing.

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre, the landslide struck the Keojaring-Byaching road construction site in Upper Subansiri, burying several people under debris. The deceased were identified as Tadu Baki, Taji Rai, Markosh Basumatari and Babul Ali. The district disaster management officer said the body of Babul Ali has been recovered and recovery work is ongoing.

Search and rescue: agencies mobilised

Local authorities have deployed personnel from Nacho Police Station for search and recovery. Fire and Emergency Services teams are being mobilised from Daporijo, and a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team will join the operation, the officer added.

In Dibang Valley district, heavy rainfall triggered a flash flood that swept away two shelters at the 5th Grenadiers' Pasu Pani Army camp. Seven Army personnel were carried away by the surge; two were rescued while five remain unaccounted for. The names of the missing personnel were given as Havaldar Upendar and Army personnel Kundan, Vinod, Aditya and Samunda.

Two search-and-rescue teams from the 5th Grenadiers have been deployed to locate the missing soldiers. Additional teams responding to the Dibang Valley incident include the 58th Battalion of the ITBP, the 62 RCC of the General Reserve Engineering Force, Arunachal Pradesh Police and local volunteers. An SDRF team from Pasighat is proceeding towards Anini to assist.

Local impacts and logistical challenges

Both incidents occurred in remote, mountainous districts where steep slopes and narrow river valleys can amplify the impact of intense rainfall. Road construction areas are particularly vulnerable to slope failure during heavy downpours, and forward military posts are often located in terrain that channels sudden runoff.

Officials have highlighted the need for coordinated multi-agency response in such terrain. The ongoing operations involve police, state disaster teams, the Army and central paramilitary forces, reflecting the scale of the incidents and the logistical complexity of search efforts in high-altitude, forested areas.

Broader context

Monsoon-related landslides and flash floods are a recurrent hazard in Arunachal Pradesh’s mountainous districts. Infrastructure projects such as road construction can increase slope instability if drainage and slope-protection measures do not keep pace with excavation, while concentrated heavy rainfall events can trigger sudden inundation in river channels and gullies.

Authorities have not issued a wider public advisory as of the latest updates, but ongoing rescue operations and recovery work mean travel on affected routes may be disrupted and residents near vulnerable slopes should follow local administration guidance.

Further information on casualties and the status of the missing personnel will be released by district officials and the State Emergency Operations Centre as search teams report back.
