Gangtok: Governor Om Prakash Mathur on Friday formally inaugurated a specially designed ceremonial hat for the Sikkim Armed Police (SAP) at Lok Bhavan, officials said. The headgear, donated from the Governor's discretionary grants, was handed over to Commandant Pangthang, Norbu Tshering Sherpa, and other SAP officers in a brief function attended by senior officials.
Hat to be worn at Independence Day parade
The ceremonial hat is intended for use by the SAP parade contingent at the 80th Independence Day celebrations scheduled at Paljor Stadium on August 15. A Lok Bhavan press release said the emblematic item will provide a distinct visual identity to the police unit during the parade.
- Event: Handover ceremony at Lok Bhavan
- Recipient: Commandant Norbu Tshering Sherpa, SAP Pangthang
- Sponsor: Lok Bhavan, through Governor's Discretionary Grants
- Deployment: To be used by SAP contingent at the Independence Day parade, Paljor Stadium
The short ceremony was attended by the Commissioner cum Secretary to Governor, Jitendra Singh Raje, and other officials, the release added. Commandant Sherpa conveyed his appreciation for the provision of the new headgear.
He said the new ceremonial hat would lend a distinctive identity to the SAP parade contingent at the 80th Independence Day celebration.
What the gift signifies
Officials said the hat is funded under the discretionary grants of the Governor and intended to augment the ceremonial kit of the Sikkim Armed Police. Such discretionary allocations are occasionally used to support cultural, ceremonial and institutional needs that fall outside regular departmental budgets.
While the handover was brief, the presentation underlines the Governor's office taking a direct role in preparing state representations for national observances. The SAP contingent will march in the Independence Day parade alongside other civil and security units, showcasing ceremonial dress and drill.

The handover comes as preparations for the state-level Independence Day celebrations are finalised, with security and ceremonial rehearsals typically completed in the days immediately prior to August 15.
There were no immediate comments from the state government or the directorate of police about changes to SAP parade formations or broader uniform policy following the handover.
