Dimapur: The Dimapur District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday issued a public advisory urging residents to stay vigilant and take precautions as heavy and persistent rainfall raises the risk of waterlogging and flooding in low-lying and vulnerable parts of the district.
Immediate precautions urged
The advisory, signed by Deputy Commissioner and DDMA chairman Tinojongshi Chang, warned people to keep a close watch on any sudden or rapid increase in water levels in drains, nallahs and other water channels. It asked residents to avoid unnecessary movement during intense rain, particularly through areas prone to inundation.
"Remain alert and take necessary precautions," the advisory said.
Authorities specifically cautioned against attempting to cross flooded roads, overflowing culverts, nallahs or fast-flowing streams either on foot or by vehicle. Parents were asked to ensure children are kept away from rivers, drains and other flooded zones during and immediately after heavy rainfall.
Advice for motorists and households
Motorists were told to exercise extreme caution at night and during heavy rain, when the depth of waterlogged sections and the condition of the road surface can be hard to judge. Residents were also advised to steer clear of fallen electric lines, damaged or weak structures and uprooted trees during rain and flood events.
- Keep essential supplies ready — medicines, drinking water, torches, mobile phones and important documents.
- Be prepared to move to safer places if conditions deteriorate or if asked to evacuate by authorities.
- Do not dump garbage or other material into drains and nallahs, as blockages can worsen waterlogging.
Community responsibilities and official updates
The DDMA appealed to the public to follow advisories issued by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and local officials. The advisory highlighted that obstructions in storm drains and water channels can impede flow and aggravate flooding during heavy precipitation.
While the advisory does not give details on rainfall measurements or specific areas under immediate threat, it underscores general preparedness steps and public behaviour to reduce risk during the current spell of rain.
Preparedness checklist
| Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Monitor water levels regularly | Enables early detection of rising flood risk in drains and streams |
| Avoid driving through standing water | Prevents vehicle stalling and reduces the risk of being swept away |
| Keep emergency kit ready | Ensures access to medicines, communications and basic needs if displaced |
The DDMA also urged people living in low-lying neighbourhoods to be ready to relocate to higher ground if required. The advisory emphasised that swift action can limit injury and property damage during sudden floods and flash-flood situations.
What residents should watch for
Authorities advised that aside from visible rising water, signs such as unusually fast currents in small streams, increased debris flow and sudden changes in drain discharge are indicators that necessitate extra caution. The DDMA cautioned that heavy rainfall at night poses additional dangers because road hazards and water depth are harder to perceive.
Local bodies and emergency services have been asked to remain on alert and respond as necessary. The advisory renews a standard plea during monsoon-related events: the community’s cooperation in keeping drains clear and heeding official instructions is central to preventing avoidable harm.
Residents are advised to follow weather bulletins and official alerts from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and local administration for the latest information and instructions.
