Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) on Wednesday issued a swell surge warning for the Kerala coast, south Tamil Nadu and the Lakshadweep islands for August 19–20, advising heightened caution for fishermen, coastal residents and beach users.

Warning and expected effects

INCOIS said high-period swells originating from the southern Indian Ocean have reached the coasts of south Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Their continued interaction with the nearshore region is expected to persist until the evening of August 20 and may cause surging of waves and inundation of low-lying coastal areas intermittently from the evening of August 19.

“Fishermen and coastal population under warning districts are cautioned to be alert for surging of waves (gushing of sea water) intermittently in the nearshore or beach region, particularly in the low-lying areas,” the INCOIS statement said.

The agency also recommended that small vessels should not ply nearshore, that boats be anchored at a safe distance from each other to avoid collision or damage, and that operational or recreational tourist activities on beaches and in nearshore zones be suspended.

Advice for coastal communities and fishing vessels

INCOIS emphasised precautions aimed at reducing risk to life and property along the shore. Practical measures it advised include:

  • Suspension of recreational and tourist activities on beaches and in nearshore waters during the warning period.
  • Small fishing vessels and non-powered boats should avoid going nearshore; larger fishing craft should take safe harbour if feasible.
  • Anchoring boats with adequate spacing to prevent collisions if left in the water, and securing shoreline equipment and structures where possible.

Local authorities and coastal panchayats are expected to monitor water levels and alert vulnerable neighbourhoods if inundation appears imminent. Residents in low-lying stretches should remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by district administrations and coastal police.

Areas and timeline

The advisory covers coastal reaches of Kerala, south Tamil Nadu and the Lakshadweep islands for the interval from the evening of August 19 until the evening of August 20.

Region Expected impact Advisory period
Kerala coast Wave surges; intermittent inundation of low-lying beaches Evening Aug 19 – Evening Aug 20
South Tamil Nadu High-period swells reaching coast; surging waves Evening Aug 19 – Evening Aug 20
Lakshadweep Possible inundation of low-lying coastal areas Evening Aug 19 – Evening Aug 20

Operational role of INCOIS

INCOIS provides forecasts and advisories on ocean conditions for the seas surrounding India, including alerts for high wave or swell conditions and cyclonic events. The agency’s bulletins are used by coastal administrations, fisheries departments and disaster management authorities to coordinate preparedness and response.

Given the timing of the advisory, authorities in Kerala are likely to keep a close watch on shorelines from the southern districts northwards. Fishermen returning from deep-sea operations or planning to head out in the next 48 hours should note the recommendation to avoid nearshore sailing and should follow directives issued by the district fisheries office and coastal police.

Residents and visitors are reminded that even moderate swell surges can lead to strong rip currents, sudden gushing of sea water onto beaches and temporary flooding of promenades and low-lying habitations. Children and elderly persons should be kept away from exposed shorelines during the advisory window.

Further updates and any escalation of the advisory will be issued by INCOIS and local authorities. Residents seeking more information should consult official district administration channels, the fisheries department and authorised INCOIS bulletins.
