Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at Kolaghat in East Midnapore district on Tuesday after encountering adverse weather while en route to Keshpur, officials said.
Flight diverted as thunderstorms sweep South Bengal
The chopper took off from Dum Dum and was bound for Keshpur in West Midnapore to attend a programme marking the death anniversary of freedom fighter Khudiram Bose, according to a dispatch attributed to PTI. A senior police officer said the decision to land at Kolaghat was taken because of deteriorating weather, and that there were no technical faults with the aircraft.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning on Monday forecasting thunderstorms and gusty winds over several parts of South Bengal on Tuesday, a bulletin that the state administration had circulated ahead of the day’s programmes.
CM completes journey by road
After the emergency landing, Adhikari continued his journey by road and reached Keshpur to take part in the commemorative event. At the gathering, the Chief Minister explained the delay, saying the weather conditions had necessitated the unscheduled stop.
“Today's date is the day the good son of India made our country free through sacrifice. Today, we are the citizens of free India. So on the day of sacrifice, we all have to come here together,”
The remarks were reported via an ANI post on X, in which Adhikari also reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the contributions of freedom fighters such as Khudiram Bose receive recognition.
Background: Khudiram Bose anniversary and local sensitivities
The event in Keshpur commemorated Khudiram Bose, who was hanged in 1908 after an attempt on a British magistrate that resulted in the deaths of two British women. The day draws attention from political leaders across the state and is marked by speeches, wreath-laying and local observances—making officials’ attendance a high-profile matter, particularly in constituencies where historical memory carries electoral and cultural weight.
Officials' assessment and safety measures
Authorities emphasised that the emergency landing was weather-related and not due to any mechanical problem. A senior police official was quoted as saying the chopper had “no technical glitches”. The IMD advisory, municipal and district administrations said they were monitoring weather developments and had issued standard advisories for public travel during periods of thunderstorms.
Local disaster-management protocols typically advise postponement of aerial travel during IMD warnings and suggest road travel as an alternative when feasible. In this instance the Chief Minister followed that course, switching to road conveyance to reach the commemorative event.

Implications for official travel and public safety
The incident underlines the operational challenges that weather poses to official travel across the state, particularly during the monsoon and pre-monsoon months when sudden thunderstorms and strong winds are common. For office-bearers and security details, such unplanned diversions require rapid coordination with district administrations and traffic authorities to ensure timely and safe onward movement.
- Weather advisory: IMD had warned of thunderstorms with gusty winds in South Bengal.
- Safety outcome: No technical fault reported; landing was weather-induced.
- Result: CM arrived at the event by road and participated in proceedings.
The episode attracted attention partly because it involved the sitting Chief Minister and an event tied to a potent historical narrative in Bengal. Local authorities said they would continue to follow IMD guidance and coordinate closely with security and aviation teams when planning official aerial movements during inclement weather.
