Ranchi: Normal life was disrupted in parts of Jharkhand on Tuesday as BJP workers enforced a state-wide bandh to protest police action against thousands of job aspirants who marched towards the state assembly over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.
Scope and conduct of the shutdown
The bandh, announced by BJP state president Aditya Sahu, was observed from 8 am to midnight, with essential services kept outside its purview, party leaders said. Most schools and business establishments remained closed in several towns, and vehicular movement was reported to be low in the state capital Ranchi and other cities.
Party leaders described the police action on Monday as “atrocities” against students and job aspirants and demanded a full inquiry into alleged irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
How the confrontation unfolded
The bandh followed a tense Monday in Ranchi when thousands of protesters—many of them aspirants for government jobs—marched towards the Assembly, breached multiple barricades and clashed with police. Authorities used water cannons near Jagannathpur Temple, fired tear gas shells and resorted to lathicharge as the protest moved towards the Vidhan Sabha precincts.
Ranchi police said 14 policemen were injured in the incidents. Several protesters also claimed injuries, according to reports.
Demands and political response
Protesters, who have been agitating since July 25, are demanding transparency in recruitment examinations, cancellation of certain tests and comprehensive reforms in the functioning of the JPSC and JSSC. They have also sought an independent probe—either by the CBI or by a panel of retired high court judges from outside Jharkhand.
The BJP backed the protesters’ demand for an independent investigation and accused the JMM-led state government of using force rather than addressing grievances. Party leaders said the bandh was necessary to register protest against what they termed as state action on students and job aspirants.
Student groups and processions
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) condemned the police action and announced a ‘Vidhan Sabha March’. The ABVP said it would stage a procession from the old Vidhan Sabha to the new assembly premises as part of its response.
“Students have been treated like criminals during the march,” BJP state president Aditya Sahu said while announcing the bandh.
- Bandh window: 8 am to midnight, with essential services exempted, party said.
- Date of escalation: clashes and police action occurred on Monday, after protests that began on July 25.
- Reported police injuries: 14 policemen, according to Ranchi police.
Local impact and administrative response
In Ranchi and other affected towns, commuters faced limited services and many offices remained shut. Local traders and school authorities reported closures early on Tuesday. Police maintained watch at key points around the Assembly and other public spaces to prevent fresh outbreaks of violence.
No formal government announcement on a probe or immediate remedial measures was included in the reports accompanying the bandh notification. The protesters’ call for a CBI inquiry or an external judicial-panel probe has become the central demand shaping political reactions in the state.
Context and potential implications
The demonstrations reflect growing public anxiety over recruitment transparency in state agencies. If the agitation persists or escalates, it could intensify pressure on the state administration to either order an independent investigation or to announce procedural reforms in recruitment processes for JPSC and JSSC. Political parties are using the issue to highlight governance and accountability ahead of future electoral cycles.
Authorities face the immediate task of balancing maintenance of public order with ensuring the safety of peaceful protesters and addressing substantive complaints about recruitment examinations through verified investigations, legal remedies and administrative reviews.
