Emergency services raced to the M7 Road near Tsietsi outside Katlehong on Wednesday morning after a scholar transport vehicle collided with a light motor car, leaving dozens hurt and prompting concern from parents and local schools.
What happened
City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said a Volkswagen microbus and a Honda Jazz were involved in the collision. The microbus, described as a ten‑seater, was reportedly carrying far more people than its capacity at the time of the accident.
“A VW Microbus, which supposedly is a ten‑seater vehicle, had twenty occupants at the time, driver inclusive,” DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said, adding that the Honda Jazz had four people on board.
Paramedics treated occupants of both vehicles at the scene before taking them to hospitals around Ekurhuleni for further care. According to the city, 19 pupils who were inside the scholar transport sustained injuries, with four children described as in serious but stable condition. Two additional scholar pedestrians waiting nearby were also hurt.
Response and rescue
DEMS reported that fire and rescue crews were dispatched shortly before 07:00. Two rescue teams — one from Zonkizizwe and another from Palm Ridge fire stations — attended the scene to carry out life‑saving interventions and assist with patient stabilisation and extrication where necessary.
- Time called: 06:55, according to DEMS
- Rescue teams: Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge fire stations
- Vehicles involved: Volkswagen Microbus and Honda Jazz
- People affected: Microbus reportedly 20 occupants; Honda Jazz 4 occupants
All injured parties were treated on scene by emergency medical personnel before being transported to nearby medical facilities across the city. Ntladi said the rescue units "simultaneously responded swiftly to the scene to render necessary life‑saving rescue operations."

Local impact and questions
The crash raises immediate questions for parents and officials about scholar transport safety and vehicle licensing. Overcrowding on scholar transport has been a persistent issue in parts of Gauteng; an overloaded vehicle can dramatically increase the risk of injury in a collision.
Schools and caregivers in Katlehong are likely to want swift clarity on the condition of the injured children and whether the operator of the kombi was authorised to carry pupils. DEMS provided the operational details of the rescue response, but investigations into the cause of the collision and any traffic or regulatory infringements remain the responsibility of the South African Police Service.
For now, families are being urged to check with the medical facilities receiving patients for updates and to follow public‑safety guidance from local authorities. The incident underscores the importance of adhering to vehicle capacity limits and ensuring scholar transport operators are properly registered and insured.
DEMS said the injured were transported to "the nearest medical facilities around the City of Ekurhuleni". The SAPS has not yet released a statement on whether a case has been opened or whether any charges will follow; the investigation into cause and culpability is expected to be handled by traffic and police investigators.
Residents with information or dashcam footage that could assist investigators are encouraged to contact their nearest police station to aid the enquiry.
