JOHANNESBURG — Gauteng education and community safety authorities have promised a sustained crackdown on criminality inside the province’s schools after weapons were recovered during searches and seven pupils were arrested for an alleged arson attack at a local school in Alexandra.
Searches follow spike in violent incidents
Education MEC Lebogang Maile said searches and seizure operations carried out with police found an assortment of weapons, including knives and bullets, at schools in Alexandra. The raids form part of a wider effort to restore discipline and safety on school premises, officials said.
The arrests came after an incident at East Bank High School, where seven pupils were detained on allegations of setting parts of the school alight. The case was opened with the relevant police station, authorities confirmed.
"It can't be that we have learners that are ill-disciplined,"
Community Safety MEC Roche Mogorosi said the behaviour of pupils who damage state property sends the wrong message to their peers. "They are damaging state property and are seen by other learners at the school premises as if nothing happened," she said.
Concern about staff conduct
MEC Maile warned that the problem was not limited to learners. He expressed concern about the conduct of some teachers, saying that instances of educators leaving early and failing to supervise pupils contributed to the environment in which weapons and destructive behaviour could flourish. "Others leave early," he said. "It is no surprise that we find these things during the search and seizure operations."
Both MECs said the raids and disciplinary measures would continue across the province for the foreseeable future as part of efforts to deter criminal behaviour and protect learners, teachers and school property.
What was recovered and immediate outcomes
Information released by the education department and police following the Alexandra operations identified the following:
- Weapons recovered: knives and bullets among other items.
- Arrests: seven pupils arrested in connection with the alleged arson at East Bank High School.
- Actions promised: continued search-and-seizure operations and stricter enforcement of discipline in schools.
| Item | Reported details |
|---|---|
| Knives | Recovered during school searches in Alexandra |
| Bullets | Found alongside other weapons during searches |
| Arson arrests | Seven pupils arrested after alleged setting of East Bank High School alight |
Community impact and next steps
Parents and school communities around Alexandra have been warned to remain vigilant. Gauteng education officials said they will continue co‑operating with the South African Police Service in targeted operations, and that disciplinary and criminal processes will run in parallel where appropriate.
Officials declined to provide further operational detail, citing ongoing investigations, but emphasised that protecting learners and staff remains the immediate priority.
Analysts and community leaders have in the past linked school violence to broader social challenges in townships, including poverty, gang activity and poor access to social services. Education department interventions typically combine tightened security, counselling services and disciplinary measures for learners, while also seeking to support teachers and school management teams to maintain a safe learning environment.
For parents and guardians: if you have concerns about safety at a school, report them to the school governing body, the district education office or the SAPS. Schools are required to keep learners safe during school hours and to work with parents and authorities when incidents occur.
The Gauteng Education Department has said it will provide updates as investigations progress and as further actions are implemented across schools in the province.
