A woman was allegedly gang-raped by four to six men late on Tuesday night in Cuttack district while she was travelling with a male friend, police said on Wednesday. The incident is reported to have taken place near Sukarpada village on the Cuttack-Chandbali Road as the pair were travelling from Bhubaneswar towards Kendrapara.
FIR registered; teams formed to hunt accused
The survivor lodged a complaint at Nischintakoili police station, following which an FIR was registered, Cuttack rural police officials said. Superintendent of Police (Cuttack rural) Vinit Agrawal said a senior officer of DSP rank and a woman police officer have been assigned to lead the probe. Multiple police teams have been constituted and raids are underway at various locations to trace and apprehend the suspects.
"The accused assaulted the friend and allegedly gangraped the woman. The group then fled the spot,” the SP said.
Police said the male companion was assaulted during the incident. The survivor is receiving medical assistance and support, authorities added. No names of suspects have been released and the exact number of assailants has been described as between four and six in initial reports to the police.
Investigation steps and immediate measures
Investigating teams are carrying out searches and questioning potential witnesses in and around Sukarpada and along the route the couple took. Officials said the presence of a DSP-level officer and a woman police officer leading the probe aims to ensure sensitivity to the survivor’s needs while expediting the investigation.
The police response so far includes:
- Registration of an FIR at Nischintakoili police station.
- Assignment of a DSP-rank officer and a woman police officer to head the inquiry.
- Formation of multiple teams conducting raids at various locations to trace the accused.
- Medical assistance and support being provided to the survivor.
Local context and safety implications
Cuttack district's road corridors, including stretches of the Cuttack-Chandbali Road, are used by commuters travelling to Kendrapara and coastal areas. Incidents of violent crime on remote stretches of highway raise concerns about traveller safety, especially at night. Police patrols and checkpoints are commonly used deterrents; the current mobilisation indicates urgency to locate the perpetrators and reassure local residents.

Guidance for travellers and community
While the investigation continues, residents and travellers along the Cuttack-Kendrapara corridor should exercise caution. Practical precautions include:
- Avoid travelling alone late at night on isolated stretches; share travel plans with family or friends.
- Use well-lit, populated routes and keep mobile phones charged with emergency numbers pre-saved.
- If stopped by strangers, keep doors locked and drive to the nearest police station or crowded area; sound the horn to attract attention.
- Victims or witnesses should preserve evidence and report incidents promptly to the nearest police station or call emergency services.
Local administration and police can issue timely advisories; residents are encouraged to follow official guidance and report suspicious movement in their neighbourhoods.
What happens next
Authorities said they are hopeful of making arrests soon as raids progress. The assignment of senior and women officers suggests the probe will combine rapid search operations with attention to the survivor’s immediate medical and legal needs. Further details, including arrests or charge sheets, will be released by the police as the investigation develops.
The alleged attack has once again highlighted the need for strengthened security measures on highway stretches and improved rapid-response mechanisms for survivors of sexual violence. Communities and law-enforcement agencies in Cuttack district will be watching the case closely as police work to bring the accused to account.
