Fatal incident at Sola STP raises safety concerns for Ahmedabad municipal works
Ahmedabad — Two workers died and two others were rescued after a collapse into a sewage treatment plant (STP) tank at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation facility in Sola on Monday, authorities said. The four men were employed by HNB Agency Company and were carrying out welding work at the time of the incident, Divisional Fire Officer SB Jadeja said.
The incident occurred when a welding worker reportedly lost consciousness due to a buildup of toxic gas inside the STP tank and fell into the pit. Three colleagues tried to assist, and all four ended up in the tank area. Fire brigade personnel responded after receiving information and mounted a rescue operation that lasted around 45 minutes, the DFO said.
- Victims identified by officials as: Manoj (site in-charge), Abhishek (welding worker), Rupesh (site project manager) and Nilesh (driver).
- Two persons were rescued and admitted to Sola Civil Hospital; they are reported to be in healthy condition by the DFO.
- Two other workers succumbed to injuries sustained during the fall and were declared dead by hospital authorities.
The Ahmedabad fire brigade and hospital officials provided the initial details. Municipal officials have not yet released a formal statement on whether an internal inquiry or closure of the STP has been ordered pending investigation.
"Four employees belonging to HNB Agency Company were carrying out welding work at the Sola STP," the official account said, adding that the emergency rescue team reached the site and started operations immediately.
Work inside confined spaces such as STP tanks involves recognised hazards including toxic gases (hydrogen sulphide, methane), oxygen deficiency and the risk of engulfment. Standard operating procedures for confined-space entry typically require gas monitoring, ventilation, personal protective equipment and trained standby attendants. The preliminary report from the fire department attributes the immediate cause to loss of consciousness from suspected toxic gas accumulation.
Local implications and municipal oversight
The Sola STP is part of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's wastewater management infrastructure. Besides the human cost, such accidents can disrupt plant operations and impact downstream sewage processing until normalcy is restored. Contractors engaged by the municipal body are contractually required to follow safety protocols; the incident will likely prompt scrutiny of contractor compliance and municipal supervision of on-site safety practices.

Health and labour authorities in Gujarat have previously emphasised enforcement of confined-space safety after similar incidents in industry and municipal works. Municipal engineers, contractor supervisors and labour inspectors must coordinate to ensure gas monitoring, atmospheric testing, ventilation and emergency-response readiness are in place before any welding or entry into sewage tanks.
The identities of the deceased and injured were provided by officials as Manoj, Abhishek, Rupesh and Nilesh. Local police and hospital authorities will complete post-mortem and medical reports before next steps such as formal FIRs or compensation claims are initiated. The Ahmedabad fire department's account, provided through the Divisional Fire Officer, remains the primary source of details at this stage.
Municipal and contractor responses, investigation findings and any administrative action by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will be material to residents and businesses reliant on uninterrupted sewage treatment services in the city’s northern wards.
