Empty 16‑coach rake runs from Yesvantpur to Mangaluru Central as officials monitor performance
Yesvantpur–Mangaluru — Indian Railways on Saturday carried out a timed trial of a 16‑coach Vande Bharat rake between Yesvantpur Junction (Bengaluru) and Mangaluru Central to evaluate the train's performance on the demanding ghat section en route. The run, operated without passengers, aimed to assess speed profiles, braking, track interaction and electrical systems under controlled conditions.
Departments and safety checks
Senior staff from several departments — including Operations, Traction Rolling Stock and Distribution (TRO/TRD), Engineering and Mechanical — were on board and at key stations to monitor the rake. They checked track conditions, braking performance, response of the train's electrical systems and traffic arrangements at stations on the route.
"The trial run is being conducted to find out the actual travel time needed for the service. The final route, timings and station stops have not been decided yet," said Mysuru Division Divisional Railway Manager Mudit Mittal, according to the report.
Timing, delays and operational context
Railway officials used the opportunity to study movement through the Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya ghat section, a stretch known for steep gradients and tight curves. The trial train reached Subrahmanya Road later than its scheduled test time for that point of the run, underlining the operational challenges the ghat section presents for a high‑speed rake.
Railways sources quoted in the coverage said the Vande Bharat is expected, on the present plan, to take around 8 hours 20 minutes from Bengaluru to Mangaluru, with the return journey estimated at about 8 hours. These are tentative and will be finalised only after analysis of the trial data and statutory clearances from the Railway Ministry.

Railway officials emphasised that the absence of passengers during the trial allowed for controlled measurements and close monitoring by technical teams. Once the Railway Ministry reviews the trial data and issues operational clearance, a formal schedule for commercial services between Bengaluru and Mangaluru will be announced.
