Oracle’s recent restructuring has placed seasoned technology professionals back on the job market even as the company increases capital spending on artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure, according to company disclosures and market reports. The move has raised questions about how many of those affected will find work in India’s expanding Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and technology services firms.
Jobs cut despite rising AI and cloud spend
Oracle has not published a precise headcount for the latest round of eliminations, but the current reduction follows an earlier decline that saw its workforce drop by about 21,000 employees — or roughly 13% — in the year ended May 31, taking the total from about 162,000 to approximately 141,000.
At the same time, Oracle’s capital expenditure has jumped sharply. The company reported spending $28.5 billion on capex in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up from $8.5 billion in the same quarter a year earlier, and retained a full-year capex guidance of $90 billion to $95 billion. The company also announced signing more than $30 billion in additional AI cloud contracts during the quarter.

India’s GCCs have expanded hiring for specialised roles over the last few years, shifting from transactional work to product engineering, AI research and cloud native development. Such centres prefer candidates who can contribute quickly to high‑value projects — and that often means mid‑career professionals with demonstrated project outcomes in cloud migration, AI deployment or platform modernisation.
At the same time, the surge in corporate capex on cloud and AI suggests continued demand for engineers who can implement and operate large infrastructure projects. Oracle’s own sizable investments indicate that the market for cloud and AI skills will remain strong, even if some vendor consolidation or workforce realignment takes place.
For affected employees, the transition may require reskilling or certification in current cloud platforms, investing in demonstrable project portfolios and shifting from support mindsets to product and outcomes orientation. Hiring teams in India will likely screen for hands‑on experience and measurable contributions to migration, automation or AI initiatives.
In short, while Oracle’s cuts add experienced professionals to India’s talent pool, absorption will be selective: the strongest demand will be for those whose skills align with cloud, data, security and automation priorities that dominate enterprise transformation today.
