Railway divisional realignment initiated; formal transfer of assets under way
The process to transfer the Mangaluru region from the Southern Railway's Palakkad Division to the Mysuru Division has commenced, with officials initiating handovers of physical assets, contractual obligations and engineering records, according to a report dated 15 September 2026.
Under the arrangement, the Mysuru Division will assume responsibility for works and contracts related to the Mangaluru region, along with required approvals. The Palakkad Division will formally hand over railway infrastructure including tracks, bridges, buildings and other civil assets to Mysuru, and will transmit technical drawings and jurisdictional sketches that define the limits of each division's authority.
- Infrastructure to be transferred includes main and loop lines, tunnels, level crossings, bridges, overpasses/underpasses and residential and office quarters.

Officials have agreed on the detailed list of assets to be transferred and those to be retained. The transfer inventory specified the length and types of track, the number of tunnels and bridges, and the total buildings and quarters in the Mangaluru area.

Despite the transfer, the Palakkad Division will retain the Bandar Ballast Depot until the current contract expires. Administrative posts and office functions will remain with Palakkad until the Mysuru Division appoints a new Assistant Divisional Engineer (ADEN). Employee quarters currently used by staff who opt to remain under Southern Railway will also be retained by Palakkad until replacement accommodation is constructed.
The handover will include technical documentation: Palakkad will provide all drawings related to bridges, foot overbridges, retaining walls and other civil infrastructure to the Mysuru Division to ensure continuity of maintenance and future work planning. The two divisions have also agreed sketches that delineate their respective jurisdictions.
Railway divisional realignments typically affect responsibility for routine maintenance, project approvals and contract administration. In this instance, officials have made specific provision that works, contracts and approvals falling strictly within Palakkad Division limits will continue to be executed by Palakkad until the completion of the periods specified in the relevant contracts.
