BJP to Contest All 117 Punjab Assembly Seats Alone, State President Rules Out SAD Tie-up

Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon said the party will fight all 117 Assembly constituencies on its own in 2027, dismissing talks of an alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and welcoming former SAD MLA Darshan Singh Kotfatta into the party fold.

Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab has decided to run independently in the 2027 Assembly elections, with state president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Tuesday ruling out an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) or any other regional outfit.

Party will field candidates on all seats

Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Dhillon said:

“Saada koi samjhauta nahi, asin 117 seats te kalle larange (We have no alliance with any party, we will contest all 117 seats on our own).”
He welcomed former SAD MLA Darshan Singh Kotfatta and several other leaders into the BJP during the event.

Dhillon dismissed speculation about a tie-up with SAD after SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, in his capacity as Punjab BJP president, he was not aware of any alliance. He added that the question of an alliance with smaller SAD factions such as SAD (Punar Surjit) would be decided by the BJP high command.

Organisational expansion and ticket talk

The state president framed the move to contest all seats as part of the party’s growth in Punjab. He noted that in earlier elections the BJP contested far fewer seats — historically contesting around two dozen seats in alliance with the SAD — and described the current strategy as a significant expansion.

On candidate selection, Dhillon said the party had not begun formal ticket distribution but acknowledged there was internal interest for several seats, noting the organisation already had “two or three candidates” under consideration in some constituencies. He also declined to intervene on candidate choices by other parties, referencing the nomination by Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) of Satwant Singh for Bassi Pathana as that party’s decision.

Responses to recent local political developments

Dhillon addressed a range of state political issues, including a reference to a recent request by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria for parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara, saying government officials had opposed parole three months ago.

Rejecting reports of internal differences in the state unit, Dhillon characterised organisational growth as naturally accompanied by disagreements but insisted that the party would accommodate leaders and assign responsibilities as it expanded.

  • Declared position: BJP will contest all 117 Punjab Assembly seats alone in 2027.
  • Alliance status: No current alliance with SAD; any tie-up with splinter groups to be decided by BJP national leadership.
  • Organisational move: Former SAD MLA Darshan Singh Kotfatta joined BJP at the press event.

Electoral context

The BJP’s decision to go solo marks a clear strategic shift from recent Punjab electoral practice when it often fought in alliance with the SAD. In the short term, the announcement will affect candidate selection dynamics across constituencies and could reshape seat-level contests, particularly in areas where the BJP previously ceded ground to allies.

Item Detail
Seats to be contested 117 (all Assembly constituencies in Punjab)
Alliance status No alliance with SAD; decision on other SAD factions lies with national leadership
Notable inductions Darshan Singh Kotfatta (former SAD MLA) and others

The BJP’s standalone approach could intensify multiparty competition in Punjab, where regional formations such as the Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress and various Akali factions remain influential. The move also comes while other local parties are finalising candidate lists and forging alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.

For farmers and voters in Punjab’s rural constituencies, the BJP’s decision will mean new choices and potential vote-splitting in areas where previously an Akali-BJP understanding helped consolidate non-Congress votes. How the BJP translates organisational expansion into seat-level strength will depend on candidate selection, ground mobilisation and alliances at the local level — matters that the state unit says are under active consideration even as the party maintains its stated posture of contesting alone.

As the calendar advances toward 2027, the BJP’s declaration is likely to provoke reactions from other parties and recalibrate campaigning strategies across Punjab.
