New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday named Rajya Sabha MP and national general secretary Vinod Tawde as its state in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, with newly appointed national secretary Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel designated as co-in-charge, the party announced in a circular.
Appointments part of wider national reshuffle
The appointments, made by BJP president Nitin Nabin, come amid a broader rejig of the party’s national leadership that was revealed on Monday. The circular said the new responsibilities take effect immediately and that other state-level in-charges will be named in due course while existing arrangements continue meanwhile.
“These appointments will come into effect immediately. The appointment of other state in-charges will be made in due course; meanwhile, the current Prabhari arrangement will continue,”
Alongside the UP assignment, the party made Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia a national general secretary in charge of Punjab and named Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh as the party's central office in-charge, replacing Arun Singh.
Why the timing matters for Uttar Pradesh
Party sources said the changes were timed with the assembly elections due early next year in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Gujarat, where Tarun Chugh has been posted, will go to polls later in 2027. The appointments signal a concentrated organisational push as the BJP prepares its campaign strategy for India’s most populous state.
Senior state leaders have already acknowledged the move. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya publicly congratulated the appointees, describing the changes as strengthening the party’s organisational capabilities in the run-up to the polls.
New faces, expanded national team
The national leadership change brought several new faces into senior roles. The number of party vice-presidents has risen to 13 from 11, while national general secretaries have been increased to 8 from seven. The list of national secretaries has grown to 16 from 11 in the previous arrangement.
Among those retained in the role of national general secretary were Vinod Tawde and Sunil Bansal, party sources said, highlighting their organisational contributions in recent state elections. The BJP has publicly cited the need to boost cadre-based work and streamline campaign preparation for the forthcoming electoral contests.
- In-charge (Uttar Pradesh): Vinod Tawde (Rajya Sabha MP, national general secretary)
- Co-in-charge (Uttar Pradesh): Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel (national secretary)
- In-charge (Punjab): Satish Poonia (national general secretary, Rajya Sabha MP)
- In-charge (Gujarat): Tarun Chugh (Rajya Sabha MP)
Implications for state leadership and campaign planning
Installing a senior national general secretary as state in-charge typically indicates a hands-on approach to candidate selection, booth-level organisation and alliance management. For Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term in 2027, such appointments are closely watched by party workers, rival parties and political analysts.
Sources within the party said Tawde and other senior organisers were being tasked with strengthening grassroots networks, coordinating with state leadership and shaping poll messaging. The inclusion of new national secretaries and the enlargement of the national team suggest a desire to widen the leadership base and spread organisational responsibilities across more leaders.
What remains to be announced
The circular indicated further state-level appointments will follow. The BJP has not yet released a full list of remaining Prabhari (in-charge) assignments; the party said the current arrangements will remain in force until those announcements are made.
| State | Assigned leader | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh | Vinod Tawde | State in-charge |
| Uttar Pradesh | Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel | Co-in-charge |
| Punjab | Satish Poonia | State in-charge |
| Gujarat | Tarun Chugh | State in-charge |
With the poll calendar approaching, state- and central-level organisational placements will be decisive for campaign readiness. The BJP's restructuring reflects that priority as it prepares for multi-state battles in the coming year.
