Flag hoisting, parade and cultural programmes at Guru Nanak Stadium
Amritsar observed the 80th Independence Day at the district-level function at Guru Nanak Stadium on Saturday, where Punjab Cabinet Minister for New and Renewable Energy Sources, Industries, Commerce and Investment Promotion, Aman Arora, hoisted the National Flag. An organised march past was led by Parade Commander ACP Gagandeep Singh, with contingents from Punjab Police, Punjab Women Police, Punjab Home Guards, NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides, and school bands taking part. Students from various schools and colleges presented cultural items reflecting patriotism and Punjabi heritage.
Welfare measures for soldiers, police and freedom fighters
Addressing the gathering, Arora paid tribute to freedom fighters and martyrs and outlined several government measures aimed at strengthening support for serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, families of martyrs and police personnel. He said the ex-gratia assistance for the next of kin of martyred soldiers had been increased from ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore. He added that Agniveers have been included in the state’s financial assistance scheme.
Arora further announced that the government had made provision for financial assistance of ₹1 crore to the families of police personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty. Monthly assistance for Dharmi Fauji pensioners has been raised from ₹10,000 to ₹12,000. He also said the monthly pension for freedom fighters of the state or their heirs had been enhanced from ₹9,400 to ₹11,000, and a one per cent reservation in direct government recruitment has been provided for heirs of freedom fighters.
"The country is free today because of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and martyrs," Arora said at the function, according to a district report.
Education projects in border subdivisions
On the development front, the minister laid the foundation stone for a Government Degree College in Ajnala, a border subdivision, to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹15 crore. He also announced that a Government Polytechnic College is under construction at Mallian village in the Jandiala Guru Assembly constituency, signalling additional higher-education capacity in the Amritsar border belt.

Local context and implications
The announcements have immediate resonance in Amritsar’s border communities, where military and police service are prominent occupations and where families of martyrs and veterans form an active social constituency. The inclusion of Agniveers within the financial assistance scheme broadens the eligibility pool and may provide relief to young short-service recruits who return to civilian life. The increases in pensions and monthly assistance aim to ease household finances among elderly veterans and freedom-fighter heirs.
New higher-education infrastructure at Ajnala and Mallian is likely to improve local access to tertiary and technical education, reducing travel time and cost for students from rural and border villages. The ₹15 crore degree-college project is a visible investment in the border subdivision, though details on timelines and admission capacities were not disclosed in the district report.
The ceremony combined cultural displays with a focus on welfare and development, underscoring the state government’s stated priorities in the border district. Parade contingents and student programmes highlighted the civic and cultural elements of the day, while the minister’s announcements addressed material support for those who served the nation and their families.
