Violent home invasion on farm outside Makhanda
A 63-year-old woman was tied up, threatened and left to hide in the bush after a violent house robbery on a farm near Makhanda, the police said. The incident occurred shortly after 22:00 on 7 August 2026 and is the subject of an ongoing investigation by local police, the spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy said.
According to Captain McCarthy, the woman heard a gunshot outside her home and went to investigate. She found two men inside a guest room, who then "violently grabbed her and demanded money." When she told them there was no cash in the house but that money might be in her office, they dragged her to another room and bound her with a cord taken from bathroom blinds.
"They would be back to kill her" if they could not find the money in the office, Captain Marius McCarthy said the suspects warned.
The suspects left the house and drove the victim's white 2016 Suzuki Jimny to search the office, Captain McCarthy said. Once she was certain the men had departed, the woman freed herself, fled into nearby bush and remained hidden until sunrise. She then made her way to staff accommodation near the office, where staff alerted the farm manager. The farm manager contacted private security and police.
Items taken and the police appeal
Police reported a number of items stolen during the raid. Those listed include valuables, personal documents and the vehicle used by the suspects. Captain McCarthy asked anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact their nearest police station.
- White 2016 Suzuki Jimny (vehicle)
- Undisclosed amount of money
- German passport
- Leica camera and binoculars
- Savage .22/.410 combination shotgun and ammunition
- Apple MacBook and iPhone
- Diamond necklace and ring
The police appeal follows a pattern of farm-related robberies in parts of the Eastern Cape that often involve the theft of vehicles and high-value equipment. The theft of a firearm also prompts additional investigative steps and may affect how police allocate resources to the enquiry.

The woman’s decision to hide until daylight and seek help from staff was central to her surviving the incident. The presence of private security on the farm was reported after the discovery and staff alerted police. The details released by police do not state whether any arrests have been made.
Farm communities around Makhanda face particular vulnerabilities: properties are often isolated, response times can be longer and the loss of vehicles and firearms increases the risk of subsequent criminal use. Local law enforcement must balance follow-up enquiries with broader regional policing demands.
Police have not released descriptions of the suspects beyond the account that two men were involved. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation has been asked to contact their nearest police station.
