Duolingo, the US-listed mobile learning platform, has acquired London-based animation and motion design studio Animade, the company announced on 13 August 2026. The move brings Animade’s creative team into Duolingo’s in-house Design Studio, a step the company said will expand its capacity for product innovation and user-facing motion design.
Why the purchase matters
Duolingo described the acquisition as an investment in creative capability and talent. Motion design has become a core part of the firm’s approach to making its product engaging and easy to use; adding Animade is intended to accelerate that work across growth experiments and new creative initiatives.
"Great products aren't defined only by what they do, but by how they make people feel," said Mig Reyes, Head of Design at Duolingo.
Animade, founded in London, is known for work across product storytelling, character animation and interactive experiences for technology brands. The studio’s team will join Duolingo’s Design Studio and increase the company’s creative presence in the UK, the announcement added.
Immediate effects and stated aims
According to Duolingo, the acquisition will:
- Increase the Design Studio’s capacity to support product innovation;
- Bring additional motion design expertise to improve learner engagement;
- Reinforce Duolingo’s investment in UK talent and creative capabilities.
Duolingo, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker DUOL, framed the deal as a strategic enhancement of its creative team rather than a simple purchase of assets. Animade co-founder Jen Judd said the studio’s mission to "share joy through thoughtful design and animation" aligned with Duolingo’s aims.
"Since day one, Animade has been on a mission to share joy through thoughtful design and animation," said Jen Judd, Co-Founder of Animade.
Context: product design and the education market
Over recent years, consumer-facing digital education products have sought to combine pedagogy with engaging design to improve retention and user satisfaction. Motion design — the use of animated elements and transitions to communicate information and reinforce brand personality — has grown more prominent as apps compete for attention on mobile devices.
By embedding Animade’s team within its internal design function, Duolingo aims to bring creative work closer to product development cycles. The firm cited the importance of design to encouraging learners to return to the app regularly, and of motion systems to helping users understand and enjoy lessons.
Deal details and limits of disclosure
The announcement did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition. It was issued as a paid press release via GlobeNewswire and framed as a strategic expansion of Duolingo’s in-house creative capabilities rather than a change to the company’s core educational technology.
| Organisation | Base | Role following deal |
|---|---|---|
| Duolingo, Inc. | Pittsburgh (US-listed) | Acquirer; host of expanded Design Studio |

The public statement emphasised continuity of mission for Animade and the creative benefits for Duolingo products, but left commercial specifics unstated. Observers will watch how Duolingo integrates the studio’s staff and whether the acquisition leads to new product features or a greater UK hiring footprint.
For now, Duolingo has signalled that creative craft and motion design will remain a priority as it seeks to maintain and grow user engagement in a competitive language-learning market.
