Historic Parichha Dam gains World Heritage Irrigation Structure tag
Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh — The nearly 140-year-old Parichha Dam in Jhansi has been selected as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure (WHIS) by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation and Water Resources Department said on August 13. The dam will receive the WHIS Award-26 at the 26th ICID International Congress and 77th International Executive Council Meeting scheduled in Marseille, France, on October 14.
The ICID communication, received by the state irrigation department, recognises Parichha Dam for its long-standing service to irrigation and water management as part of the Betwa Canal System. Department officials have been invited to attend the award ceremony, the communication added.
Local significance for irrigation and power
Built across the Betwa River, Parichha Dam remains a central element of water distribution in Bundelkhand, a region that has historically faced erratic rainfall and water scarcity. The dam supplies regulated flows to the Betwa Canal System, which in turn supports agriculture across parts of Jhansi district and neighbouring areas.
Beyond irrigation, Parichha plays a role in the region’s energy infrastructure. Water from the dam is used by the Parichha Thermal Power Project, which has an installed capacity of 920 MW, linking dam operations directly to power generation and regional electricity availability.
Structure, storage and upgrades
Constructed almost one and a half centuries ago, the Parichha structure continues to function for its original purpose while undergoing modifications to meet contemporary demands. Key technical details released by the department include:
- Length: about 1,174 metres
- Height: nearly 16.8 metres above riverbed
- Gates: 318 steel gates to regulate flows
- Storage capacity: originally ~1,700 million cubic feet, increased to ~2,400 million cubic feet

Why the award matters for Jhansi and Bundelkhand
The WHIS recognition places Parichha Dam — and by extension Jhansi’s irrigation heritage — on an international platform. That has practical and symbolic implications. Practically, it highlights an operational water infrastructure that has been adapted over decades to sustain agriculture and industry. Symbolically, it draws attention to the historical continuity of water management in a region often described in development discourse as water-stressed.
For farmers and local water users, the award may help mobilise technical exchanges and access to best practices. International recognition can also strengthen the case for continued investment in maintenance, capacity enhancement and ecosystem-sensitive operation of the dam and associated canals.
Officials and next steps
The Uttar Pradesh Irrigation and Water Resources Department confirmed receipt of ICID’s selection note on August 13 and said department representatives will attend the October ceremony in Marseille. The department has not issued further operational statements beyond the invitation and selection communication.
In coming months, stakeholders in Jhansi and Bundelkhand will be watching whether the recognition leads to concrete technical cooperation or funding opportunities for modernising distribution networks, enhancing storage, or incorporating climate resilience into water operations. Given Parichha’s dual role in irrigation and power supply, any interventions will need to balance agricultural water requirements with thermal power plant needs and downstream ecological considerations.
The ICID award brings Parichha Dam into an international conversation about heritage irrigation systems, while underscoring the continuing centrality of local infrastructure in the livelihoods and energy security of Jhansi and wider Bundelkhand.
