Opposition questions official claims after private US trip
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) at the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has levelled sharp criticism at Mayor V.V. Rajesh, alleging that he misled the public by making sweeping claims about outcomes from a recent trip to the United States. The opposition's Parliamentary Party leader, S.P. Deepak, said the Mayor travelled on a private visit at the invitation of an American Malayali association and subsequently presented the visit in a manner unbecoming of the civic office.
“The Mayor, who went on a private visit at the invitation of an American Malayali association is making baseless claims not befitting the position of Mayor. When the travel permit issued by the Union and State governments do not include any official or semi-official programmes, making such statements after returning is tantamount to misleading the public,” said Mr. Deepak in a statement.
Mr. Deepak's statement criticised the Mayor for publicising what the LDF described as unsubstantiated benefits from the trip while, in his view, failing to acknowledge the complexities of American policies and their implications for India’s trade and diaspora community. The opposition leader urged that any claims about tangible development benefits for the city should be accompanied by clarity on how such outcomes would arise.
Allegations over protocol and recent travel record
The LDF also recalled a previous high-profile journey to Delhi undertaken by the Mayor and his team soon after taking office, which drew attention at the time. Mr. Deepak said those who earlier suggested the Prime Minister would unveil a “blueprint” for Thiruvananthapuram’s development have now moved to announce a “twin city” arrangement following the US visit, implying inconsistency between promise and delivery.
- Nature of the visit: Described by the opposition as a private trip at the invitation of an American Malayali association.
- Travel permits: According to Mr. Deepak, Union and State government travel permits did not list any official or semi-official programme related to the Mayor’s trip.
- Post-trip conduct: The Mayor held a reception on return; opposition alleges municipal employees were kept standing in the sun for two hours during official hours.
In addition to questioning the trip's status, Mr. Deepak alleged that following the Mayor's return a reception was organised in his honour and that municipal employees were kept in the sun for about two hours during official hours. The LDF characterises these actions as inappropriate use of position and a disregard for staff welfare.
| Allegation | Opposition claim |
|---|---|
| Private visit presented as official | Mayor made baseless claims about outcomes despite no official programme on travel permit |
| Public expectations | Earlier Delhi visit promised a government 'blueprint'; now twin city announcement after US trip |
| Conduct on return | Reception organised; employees allegedly kept in the sun for two hours |
The opposition statement framed these issues as matters of public accountability, arguing that the Mayor should not conflate private invitations with official engagements and should provide clear evidence if he wishes to claim developmental gains for Thiruvananthapuram arising from foreign visits.
Political context and expectations
The criticism underlines the heightened scrutiny faced by civic leaders in Kerala, where residents often expect detailed accountability on expenditure, official travel and the tangible outcomes of international engagement. The LDF's remarks reflect broader political contestation over how local development narratives are presented to citizens and how municipal resources and staff are managed.
At this stage, the Mayor has not issued a public response to the LDF's charges in the statement cited by the opposition. The Corporation's record of high-profile visits and promises has been a recurring theme in city politics, and the latest exchange is likely to provoke further debate about transparency and protocol in the days ahead.
