Mumbai, Maharashtra
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated the new premises of the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC) at Sharada Sadan in Fort, Mumbai, and launched a national Security Operations Centre (SOC) for urban cooperative banks, an official release from the Union Ministry of Cooperation said.
The event formed part of the Ministry's 'Sahkar Nav‑Kranti' programme held at the BSE International Convention Centre in Mumbai and brought together central and state leaders, representatives of urban cooperative bank federations and officials involved in the sector's regulation and oversight.
"The long‑awaited Umbrella Organisation for Urban Cooperative Banks has now become a ground reality with recognition from the Reserve Bank of India, adequate capital and its new office," Shah said, according to the ministry release.
According to the release, Shah also inaugurated the SOC for Urban Cooperative Banks and rolled out core banking and allied services under a nationwide service bundle intended to enhance the security, transparency and competitiveness of the cooperative banking network.
The programme included the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding between the NUCFDC and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), the release added. The move signals an emphasis on forensic, cybersecurity and investigative collaboration for the cooperative sector, which has faced technological and governance challenges in recent years.

Addressing the gathering, Shah underlined the historical significance of the venue, noting that the building — currently used as an auditorium — had served as the "heartbeat of India's stock market" for nearly a century, the ministry release said. He framed the 'Sahkar Nav‑Kranti' as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader vision of 'Sahkar Se Samriddhi' and as fulfilling directives from the Ministry of Cooperation to modernise cooperative banking.
Officials said the SOC and the nationwide service bundle aim to provide standardised core banking infrastructure and centralised security monitoring for urban cooperative banks, many of which have been small, regionally focused institutions with varying levels of technological adoption and capital buffers. The NUCFDC, now housed in Fort, is expected to play a coordinating role for capacity building, capital support and compliance assistance across the urban cooperative banking sector, the release indicated.
Representatives of urban cooperative bank federations from several states attended, underlining the national reach of the initiative and the sectoral interest in arrangements that can bring modern banking systems, forensic capabilities and stronger cybersecurity to cooperative lenders. The release did not provide financial estimates or timelines for deployment of the SOC and related core banking services.
The inauguration in Mumbai comes amid ongoing efforts at the Centre and in states to consolidate regulatory oversight and strengthen governance in cooperative banks, which serve millions of customers in urban and semi‑urban areas. City residents and small depositors who rely on urban cooperative banks will be watching for how quickly the announced systems and partnerships translate into improved service reliability and deposit security.
Local context: Fort remains a frequent site for financial and institutional inaugurations in Mumbai, linking the city's colonial‑era commercial heritage with contemporary policy steps aimed at the retail financial sector. Officials said the new NUCFDC office in Sharada Sadan symbolises a centralised institutional focus on urban cooperative banks.
