CM says new facility will strengthen military education and character-building
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday inaugurated the NCC Academy Complex here, describing the project as a significant investment in the character-building, leadership development and national service orientation of the State's youth.
Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, the Chief Minister said the Academy will act as an institutional platform to inculcate discipline, patriotism, physical fitness and leadership among young cadets, and will serve to inspire them to pursue officer-level careers in the Indian Armed Forces.
"The youth are the greatest strength of Arunachal Pradesh. Our responsibility is not merely to provide them education and employment opportunities, but also to build their character and instil in them the values of discipline, responsibility, and service," he said.
Khandu linked the new NCC facility to two complementary initiatives already in place: the Chief Minister’s Frontier Sainik School Scholarship Scheme and an Indian Army-led mentorship programme. He said these three elements together would create a stronger ecosystem for military education and national service in the State.
- The scholarship scheme provides financial support to Arunachali students studying in eight notified Sainik Schools and the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun.
- The Indian Army mentorship programme is intended to guide cadets toward disciplined service and officer-level career options.
- The NCC Academy Complex will focus on training that emphasises fitness, leadership and national service ethos.
Regional ambitions and technology caution
While detailing the State's ambitions, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Pasighat facility would evolve into a regional centre of excellence for cadets across the Northeast. He framed the Itanagar Academy as part of a broader network supporting military education in Arunachal Pradesh.
Khandu also cautioned cadets about the rapid proliferation of technology. He acknowledged the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media to transform education and employment, but urged young people to use these tools responsibly. He called for the cultivation of critical thinking to guard against misinformation and cyber vulnerabilities, and stressed that technology should enhance human capability rather than distract from physical fitness and personal growth.
What officials highlighted and immediate implications
The inauguration signals a state-level push to strengthen institutional pathways from school-level schemes to disciplined services. By aligning the scholarship scheme, army mentorship and the NCC Academy, the government aims to create clearer routes for Arunachali youth interested in defence careers.
| Initiative | Primary focus |
|---|---|
| Chief Minister’s Frontier Sainik School Scholarship Scheme | Financial support for Arunachali students in eight notified Sainik Schools and RIMC, Dehradun |
| NCC Academy Complex (Itanagar) | Training in discipline, fitness, leadership and national service for cadets |
| Indian Army-led mentorship programme | Guidance for pursuing officer-level careers in the Armed Forces |
For residents of Itanagar and the State, the Academy is likely to mean increased access to structured pre-service training and closer coordination with scholarship and mentorship programmes. The Chief Minister's emphasis on responsible technology use also frames the Academy's training priorities beyond physical drills to include awareness of digital risks.
The Chief Minister’s comments positioned the inauguration as both a local development in Itanagar and part of a larger strategy to nurture a pipeline of disciplined, service-oriented youth from Arunachal Pradesh into national defence and related leadership roles.
