Centre clears eight weekly specials from Hyderabad; pilgrim routes prioritised
The Central Government has approved eight new weekly train services originating from Hyderabad, the Ministry of Railways and Union sources said, a move expected to expand travel options for pilgrims and long‑distance travellers from the city. The decision follows representations by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, according to an Akashvani report.
The new trains will depart from Kacheguda, Cherlapally and Nampally stations, linking Hyderabad with destinations in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh as well as Rajasthan and Odisha. Five of the services are dedicated to religious travel, serving Tirupati and Tiruchanur, while the remaining three are long‑distance connections to Shri Ganganagar, Jaipur and Bhubaneswar.
Start dates and initial schedule
Railway scheduling for the new services has been staggered. The first of the weekly specials to commence will be the Cherlapally–Bhubaneswar service on 5 May, the report stated. Several Tiruchanur and Tirupati specials from Cherlapally and Kacheguda will follow during May. A weekly train to Shri Ganganagar is slated to begin on 14 July. The start date for the Nampally–Jaipur weekly special will be announced by the South Central Railway soon.
| Origin station | Destination | Start date (announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Kacheguda | Tirupati / Tiruchanur (services) | May (various dates) |
| Cherlapally | Bhubaneswar; Tirupati / Tiruchanur (services) | 5 May (Bhubaneswar); May (pilgrim trains) |
| Nampally | Jaipur (weekly special) | To be announced |
| Cherlapally | Shri Ganganagar | 14 July |
Local significance and expected impact
Hyderabad is home to a large number of devotees travelling to Tirupati and Tiruchanur; the allocation of five pilgrim‑centric weekly trains aims to ease seasonal congestion on existing services and provide more convenient origin points within the city. The addition of long‑distance links to northern Rajasthan and Odisha is likely to benefit both leisure and business travellers, and could improve interstate rail connectivity for residents of Hyderabad and surrounding districts.
- Stations involved: Kacheguda, Cherlapally, Nampally (Hyderabad origin points).
- Destinations: Tirupati, Tiruchanur, Bhubaneswar, Shri Ganganagar, Jaipur.
- Key dates: Cherlapally–Bhubaneswar starts 5 May; Shri Ganganagar service from 14 July; Nampally–Jaipur date pending.
"Mr Reddy expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Railway Minister for approving these services," the report said.
Railway officials in the South Central Railway (SCR) zone will finalise rake allocation, timings and reservation quotas before formal flagging off. The SCR’s announcement on the Nampally–Jaipur service is expected to include platform allocations at Secunderabad/Nampally and detailed running days. Passengers are advised to wait for formal notifications and reservation windows on the Indian Railways portal.
Context within Hyderabad’s transport network
Hyderabad's rail infrastructure has been expanding in recent years to serve a growing metropolitan population and rising inter‑state movement. Cherlapally has been used increasingly for originating and terminating special trains to decongest main terminals; Kacheguda and Nampally continue to serve key intra‑ and inter‑state routes. Officials view the new weekly services as complementary to existing timetables rather than replacements.
Local commuters and pilgrim groups, as well as travel agencies handling temple pilgrimages, welcomed the announcements as reported. The new services are expected to offer additional reservation options during peak seasons and festival periods, though detailed fare and stoppage information will be issued by South Central Railway ahead of each service's commencement.
Implementation of the schedule will be monitored locally by railway divisions and district authorities to ensure operations, passenger amenities and connectivity with city transport—such as feeder bus services to Cherlapally and station access at Kacheguda and Nampally—are in place once the specials commence.
