Pre‑dawn crash near SkyTrain pillar triggers police watchdog review
Surrey investigators and the provincial police watchdog were on scene Monday after a pickup truck that had been the subject of a police stop collided with a Surrey Police vehicle and then struck a concrete SkyTrain pillar near King George Station, seriously injuring a pedestrian and sending the pickup driver to hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) says the incident unfolded at about 2:56 a.m. in the Whalley area, close to the intersection of King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue. Surrey Police Service (SPS) collision investigators also attended the scene and assisted in the initial response.
According to the IIO, officers attempted to stop a black Chevy Avalanche near King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue. The IIO says the driver did not stop, and a collision between the pickup and a police vehicle occurred. Moments later, the pickup struck a concrete SkyTrain barrier at Holland Commons beside King George Station, resulting in injuries to the driver.
“A collision involving the pickup truck and a police vehicle subsequently occurred. The driver failed to stop. A short time later, the pickup truck was involved in a collision with a concrete SkyTrain barrier on King George Boulevard at Holland Commons, resulting in injuries to the driver.”
Surrey Police issued a news release saying the pedestrian was taken to hospital with life‑threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup was transported to hospital with serious but non‑life‑threatening injuries.
Traffic disruption and community impact
King George Boulevard was closed in both directions for several hours between approximately 98A Avenue and 100 Avenue as investigators examined the scene. Police advised motorists to use alternate routes while collision reconstruction and evidence gathering were under way. The area around King George Station is a busy transit and pedestrian hub; such closures can have ripple effects on commute times and SkyTrain access for nearby residents and businesses.

Watchdog seeks witnesses and footage
The IIO has opened an investigation and is asking anyone who witnessed any portion of the incident, or who may have video of it — including dashcam footage — to get in touch. Contact details and an online reporting form are available through iiobc.ca. The IIO is the civilian oversight body that investigates incidents involving police where there has been serious harm or death.
| What | Detail |
|---|---|
| Initial police action | Attempted stop of pickup near King George Blvd & 96 Ave |
| Subsequent collisions | Pickup collided with police vehicle, then with concrete SkyTrain barrier |
| Road closure | King George Blvd closed between 98A Ave and 100 Ave for several hours |
The crash raises questions for local residents about road safety at a major intersection and the potential dangers posed by high‑speed collisions near transit infrastructure. The concrete pylons and guideways that protect SkyTrain infrastructure also stand close to vehicle traffic, creating tragic consequences when vehicles lose control.
Surrey’s rapid growth has increased traffic volumes in Whalley and the City Centre, where densification, transit access and pedestrian flows converge. Incidents like Monday’s underline the challenge of balancing mobility, enforcement and public safety on busy corridors.
For now, the IIO will lead the independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the stop and subsequent collisions. Anyone with pertinent information is asked to contact the IIO directly so investigators can establish a clearer timeline and determine whether further action is warranted.
Updates will be provided by the IIO and Surrey Police Service as the investigation proceeds.
