Patrol deputies in El Paso County detained a juvenile male early on Aug. 17 after a rash of commercial burglaries in which a suspect fired a handgun and attempted to use a vehicle to ram into a business, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Sequence of events
At about 5 a.m., dispatchers received a report of a burglary in progress on Space Village Avenue in unincorporated El Paso County. As deputies responded, callers told operators the suspect was breaking windows at several neighbouring businesses and entering buildings; witnesses also reported hearing gunfire.
Video reviewed by arriving deputies showed a person matching the description of the suspect. Deputies recovered multiple spent shell casings from one of the vandalized businesses and confirmed a handgun had been discharged at the scene. Investigators say the suspect then tried to drive a BMW SUV through the walls of a business before fleeing.
Shortly afterward, the sheriff’s office received additional calls that several businesses had been burglarized along N. Powers Boulevard. Deputies located spent shell casings at one of those locations consistent with those found earlier.
Vehicle located in residential area; juvenile taken into custody
While investigating, officers were dispatched about 6:30 a.m. to a suspicious incident near Skuna Drive in the Lorson Ranch neighbourhood. Residents reported a BMW SUV with heavy front-end damage had entered the area; the driver had been seen wearing a black ski mask. Deputies confirmed the vehicle was the same SUV believed to have been used in the earlier burglaries, and evidence linked to the break-ins was visible inside through a passenger door.
Law enforcement established a containment and announced for occupants to exit. An uninvolved adult female and a minor left the residence along with a juvenile male whose appearance matched the suspect description. The juvenile was detained without incident. A safety search of the home and the vehicle produced evidence consistent with the reported burglaries. Deputies also determined the BMW had been reported stolen.

Investigation and public-safety implications
The sheriff’s office has tied the incidents across at least two commercial corridors through surveillance footage, physical evidence and the recovered vehicle. Deputies collected shell casings at multiple scenes and located property inside the SUV that investigators believe came from the burglarized businesses.
- Timing: Events unfolded over roughly a 90-minute window in the early morning.
- Use of force and property damage: A firearm was fired and a vehicle was used in an apparent attempt to force entry into a business.
- Arrest: A juvenile matching the suspect description was taken into custody without incident after the vehicle was located in a residential neighbourhood.
At this stage, the sheriff’s office confirmed the juvenile was detained and that evidence believed related to the burglaries was recovered, but public materials did not include charges or further details about the juvenile’s identity or condition. The discovery that the SUV had been reported stolen adds a theft element to the investigation.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas were put on alert as deputies canvassed for witnesses and examined surveillance footage. The incident underscores the range of risks first responders and commercial operators face during overnight hours when properties are less likely to be occupied.
Investigators with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office continue to process the scenes and the vehicle, and more information is expected as the agency advances its inquiries and reviews forensic evidence.
