CRAPAUD One person was killed and another seriously injured after a head‑on collision between a pickup truck and a commercial vehicle on Route 1 near the Route 13 intersection on Wednesday afternoon, RCMP say.

What happened

Provincial RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Gavin Moore said the crash occurred at about 5 p.m. and involved a commercial F‑550 type truck pulling an enclosed trailer and an oncoming pickup truck headed west.

“It would appear that a commercial truck — this is an F‑550 type of truck that was hauling an enclosed trailer — departed across the centre line, veered across the centre line, into the path of an oncoming pickup truck,”

The driver of the pickup, identified by police as a 63‑year‑old man from Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was in the same pickup was transported to hospital with life‑threatening injuries. The person driving the commercial vehicle, who is from Prince Edward Island, suffered minor injuries, Moore said.

Investigation underway

RCMP said initial information indicates the commercial vehicle crossed the centre line. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.

Moore told reporters police are examining a range of possibilities that could cause a vehicle to cross the centre line, including:

  • mechanical problems with the vehicle;
  • drowsy or inattentive driving; and
  • road conditions at the time of the crash.

The road was closed for several hours while a collision reconstructionist from the RCMP examined the scene. Emergency response to the crash included the Crapaud Fire Department and Island EMS.

Local impact and context

Route 1 is a primary east‑west artery on Prince Edward Island. Long closures after serious collisions can affect traffic flow for communities that rely on the highway for commuting and commerce. Wednesday’s closure would have diverted motorists and potentially delayed emergency and commercial traffic in the area while investigators worked.

Fatal collisions on the Island remain relatively uncommon compared with larger provinces, but each prompts local concern about road safety, vehicle maintenance and driving practices. RCMP typically examine whether fatigue, mechanical failure or environmental factors played a role when there is no indication of impairment.

Practical information for motorists

Drivers travelling Route 1 are reminded to:

  • maintain a safe speed for conditions,
  • avoid distractions and take breaks if feeling drowsy, and
  • ensure vehicles are roadworthy before long trips, particularly commercial trucks towing trailers.

Anyone with information about the collision or who witnessed the incident has been asked to contact RCMP. Police rely on witness accounts and any available video to help reconstruct events leading up to serious crashes.

Next steps

RCMP continue to investigate the collision. As is standard, their reconstruction will assess vehicle positions, skid marks, debris, and other physical evidence to try to determine sequence of events and causal factors.

No further details about the victims were released by police Wednesday evening. The RCMP and emergency services in the region did not indicate whether speed or weather were factors at the time beyond what is under active investigation.

For the communities around Crapaud, the crash is a somber reminder of the risks on provincial roads and the impact a few minutes can have on multiple families and local responders called to the scene.
