Major Crime Unit investigates late-night shooting and nearby vehicle fire
The Abbotsford Police Department is investigating after shots were fired at a vehicle late Saturday night in what investigators say is a targeted incident. Officers responded to a report of a shooting on McCallum Road shortly after 11 p.m., and later discovered an SUV fully engulfed in flames on Sunnyside Place.
Police confirmed on Sunday that no one was injured in the shooting. The force says the two events occurred close in time and investigators are examining whether the burnt SUV found on Sunnyside Place is connected to the shooting on McCallum Road between Switzer Avenue and Braun Avenue.
“They believe the incident was targeted.”
The Abbotsford Police Department identified a dark-coloured SUV as being involved in the shooting. After attending the scene of the gunfire, officers were called to the separate report of a vehicle fire on Sunnyside Place near Sunnyside Crescent, where they found the SUV fully engulfed.
The department has not publicly confirmed a direct link between the shots fired and the vehicle fire. The AbbyPD Major Crime Unit has assumed carriage of the investigation and is working to determine motive and identify any suspects. Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward.
- Incident type: Shots fired at vehicle; vehicle fire
- Reported time: Shortly after 11 p.m. (shooting)
- Locations: McCallum Road (between Switzer and Braun); Sunnyside Place (near Sunnyside Crescent)
- Injuries: None reported
The sequence and proximity of the two scenes underscore the challenges police face when multiple, potentially linked incidents occur within a short period. Officers from uniformed patrols responded initially and then handed the matter over to specialized investigators to preserve evidence and pursue a clearer picture of what transpired.
For residents, the events are the latest in a series of high-profile violent incidents across municipalities in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland that have prompted calls for increased community information and policing resources. Police departments typically release limited details in the early stages of such investigations to avoid compromising evidence or tipping off suspects. That caution leaves neighbours seeking reassurance and clarity.
Investigations of this kind can involve forensic examination of bullet trajectories, shell casings and vehicle remains, witness canvasses and review of any available surveillance or dash-cam footage. The Abbotsford Major Crime Unit will also be looking for connections to other incidents and for any intelligence that might explain a possible motive.
| Event | Approximate time | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Shooting reported | Shortly after 11 p.m. | McCallum Road (between Switzer Ave. & Braun Ave.) |
| Vehicle fire reported | Soon after shooting | Sunnyside Place (near Sunnyside Crescent) |
Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area late Saturday and who noticed suspicious activity, or who has dash-cam or doorbell footage, to contact the Abbotsford Police Department. Community tips remain one of the most effective ways to advance criminal investigations.
As the Major Crime Unit continues its work, Abbotsford residents can expect targeted patrols and increased investigative presence in the affected neighbourhoods while detectives follow up on leads.
